For the start-screen of the map,

This is not important at all for the moment, and might be nice in the future.

Position via IP very problematic in terms of privacy.
Will implement world-map view soon.

I don't see why privacy is an issue here. We will just use IP information the server already collected to provide a centered view to the user.

Or do you have other considerations in mind @species?

I share the viewpoint of gandhiano.Afaik would we not store any information related to the individual.

The privacy-problem is that the geolocation API used by the browsers is Google (which is technically not allowed in Europe).
If we decide to geolocate the user on start, every user would get a popup : "This site wants to know your location: agree/disagree" - I find this very annoying.
A possible workaround would be a 'locate me' button like in the Demo Maps. If you click the "crosshair" button (below +/-), only then the user is asked to allow access to his location.

let´s put that as a possible future development and focus otherwise. It is not a core requirement, and there are not dependencies for further development or termination of the assignment.
