Unable to connect to (local) repo using http

I need to be able to connect to my local gitea repo as http not https. I tried:

VCS_ALLOW_SCHEMES = ["http"]

I also tried:

VCS_ALLOW_SCHEMES = ["http","https","ssh"]

but it still tells me I cannot connect using http.

Could not update repository: Cloning into '...'... fatal: transport 'http' not allowed (128)

I can git clone it using that (http) URL from the command line.
