splitscreen view with a second screen as simple editor

Some presenters have a complete script of their talks or already closed captions for some videos in their presentations. If we were able to obtain them, we could simply display it in a second window, next to the original subtitle area, so the angles could copy from the original script or may edit a word or two and copy it then to the subtitling area (or copy it via clicking on line number or something equivalent). This shouldnt be a shared view to the script, each user should be able to manipulate it on their own.

There are several subtitle formats (like .srt). Which one is commonly used?

.srt files could be opened in a plain text editor anyway.
