As far as I know, All players must load to finalize loading of the map. Objectives nor items will spawn until the last man enters. I believe this was changed in a recent patch.(Before the patch) the host had to load before everything spawned but this caused heavy disconnects. Now everyone must load.
If you die you may still be able to move but in the latest git (v.3) interactions have been removed, this is currently on the todo list to add back in but may take time.

Ghosts will hunt the same player indefinitely, the same is true after death, because players who are not spirit bodies cannot open the door after death? How to not show the door like the original version?
Can it be added to the game without waiting for the player to load the props directly
