Migration from Trillium in an LXC container to Trillium Next in docker.

I'm currently using trillium using an LXC container on proxmox. I was originally trying out a script from that automatically installed trillium and got it up and running. I originally thought I would just try it out, but fast forward to today I have managed to rely on this notes application.

As part of the move from Trillium to Trillium Next I wanted to move from the LXC container, as person maintaining it has unfortunately passed away, to using Docker. I was hoping someone could help me understand how I can migrate my existing notes (where are they and how do I move them ?).

@pradt , you should be able to find the directory containing the data by going to the global menu (Trilium icon) and selecting "About Trilium Notes.

It's enough to copy the whole folder and ensure the right permissions (no hard requirements here, they just need to be accessible for read/write to the Docker instance).

Do you have a link to the said script for LXC container on Proxmox?

The script that I installed it from is tteck, who has unfortunately passed away.

ok great, I see it pointing to /root/trilium-data, now having seen it I can see a bunch of files including the db file. So copying this and passing this into a TriliumNext Docker container it should work ?

I had an issue at first when I tried, it complained that something had failed. Unfortunately the version that I was sitting on was 0.60.2 or something. So I used Zadam repository to manually update it and there was a migration in one of the releases which updated everything. And now on TriliumNext.

Migrated all the data sucessfully, and manually upgraded each version using Zadam's reportory till I got to the latest then swapped over. Everything as I can see is working successfully.

I'll just leave the instructions that I did to move from a lxc container (in proxmox) to docker in case it helps someone.

Find the container ID from Proxmox (in my case it was 113).

1. from the node's shell use the command pct enter 113 <change 113 to your container id
2. locate the directory of the data as per Eliandoran and make sure its there
3. Tarball the files tar -zcvf trilium-backup.tar.gz /root/trilium-data where /root/trilium-data was my path you should change this
4. Move the file to a location that you can reference mv trilium-backup.tar.gz ~/ I just moved it to the root home then exit
5. Get the tarball out of the container pct pull 113 /root/trilium-backup.tar.gz /mnt/backup/trilium-backup.tar.gz the /mnt/backup was a network share so I can get the tarball to the vm where it would come to a rest to serve into the docker container
6. So in the VM go to the mountpoint where the tarball is (I was serving the same directory which i had mounted in the VM), and extract the tarball tar -zxvf trilium-backup.tar.gz
7. Then create a directory for data to the docker container mkdir /mnt/docker/volumes/trilium-data
8. Move all the files mv /mnt/backup/root/trilium-data/* /mnt/docker/volumes/trilium-data
9. Then clean up and try run docker and see if everything worked.
