Thanks to the LM team for an excellent OS and all the hard work that goes into it.
I’d like to suggest adding an OpenGL capability check before applying updates that require hardware acceleration for Cinnamon.
On older systems (for example, machines with ATI X1200/X1250 or other pre‑SSE4.2 GPUs), certain updates can result in a black screen because Cinnamon cannot start without sufficient OpenGL support.
A pre‑update check could detect unsupported OpenGL versions and display a friendly warning recommending alternatives such as Cinnamon Software Rendering, MATE, or Xfce.
This would help users avoid a confusing black‑screen situation and make Linux Mint even more user‑friendly for older hardware and would save users a lot of time and frustration.
