we're going to need some sort of protection for users feeds comming from this plugin,
solution should work with majority of feed-readers out there,
in my opinion we should introduce an http-basic auth infront of the feeds

Wouldn't a random auth token be sufficient enough and work much more broadly with feedreaders?
Similar to the sharing tokens in ownCloud itself.
Then either there is a possibility to regenerate or generate tokens for different readers. (Invalidation could just be on regeneration or disabling of making the feed public.)
