Conditionally display option

Since the removal of needs_hide_options we are advised to use a custom layout to not display an option.

My use case is to conditionally display an option, based on need's option, e.g. the tags values.

I guess I could conditionally define the layout but it would be quite cumbersome to redefine the complete layout, less the field I don't want. And what if I want multiple conditionally displayed fields ?

Has someone an idea about it ?
Why this option has been removed ?
