Version: 26.11.5.1

What does this implement/fix?

The LTR-390UV light + UV sensor is discontinued, and newer MSR-2 boards carry an LTR-303ALS-01 instead (light only, no UV). This PR makes one firmware image run on both boards. At boot it detects which chip is fitted and shows only that chip's entities. Live LTR390 devices see no change to their existing entities.

How it works

  • Detection at boot. An on_boot step at priority 700 probes the I2C bus at 0x53 (LTR-390UV) and 0x29 (LTR-303ALS). It runs after the I2C bus is up and before the sensor drivers set up. If both addresses stay silent, it retries for up to about 200 ms, because the LTR-303 needs 100 ms after power-up before it answers.
  • Only the fitted chip's entities are shown. The absent chip's entities get set_internal(true) before the API lists entities, so Home Assistant never sees them. ESPHome supports this call at boot from 2026.9.0 (see entity_base.h). The absent chip's driver gets mark_failed("not fitted…"), which skips its setup and stops it from retrying a chip that isn't there.
  • Safe fallback. Entities are hidden only when the other chip answered. If neither chip answers (a hardware fault or a glitch at boot), every entity stays visible and reads Unknown. A live LTR390 device can therefore never lose its entities, history or automations because of a one-off probe miss.
LTR-390UV board (all live devices) LTR-303ALS board (new)
LTR390 Light ✅ unchanged hidden
LTR390 UV Index ✅ unchanged hidden (no UV hardware)
LTR390 Update Interval (config, disabled by default) ✅ unchanged, keeps stored value hidden

Light Sensor Model (new, diagnostic) LTR-390UV LTR-303ALS

Back-compat decisions

  • Existing entity names are unchanged. ESPHome builds each entity's Home Assistant unique ID and its saved-settings key from the entity name. Renaming "LTR390 Light" to something generic would orphan that entity on every live device: new entity ID, lost history, broken automations. It would also reset the saved update interval.
  • No new min_version. It stays at 2026.8.0. On 2026.8.x set_internal() still works but prints a deprecation warning at compile time. 2026.9.0 and later compile cleanly.

Factory self-test

  • The light check accepts a reading from either chip. The UV check passes automatically on LTR-303-only boards, since there's nothing to measure.
  • LTR390 boards behave exactly as before. They keep the 5 s window. LTR-303 boards get up to 15 s, because in dim light their auto-gain can take several 1 s steps before the first reading. Passing units on either board still go green as soon as every check passes.
  • The LTR-303 starts each reading at 8X gain instead of ESPHome's 1X default. ESPHome's auto mode restarts every reading from the configured gain. From 1X it needs 3–5 one-second gain steps to reach typical indoor light. From 8X, roughly 220–6700 lux needs no step at all, so readings land in about 1 s. Auto mode still goes up to 96X and down to 1X, so the measurement range is unchanged.
  • Until the fitted sensor publishes its first reading, the poller asks it every second (for the first 30 s only). The LTR-303 driver ignores update() for its first 100 ms, and this keeps that from pushing the first reading out by a whole interval.

Logs

ESPHome logs any failed component as an error. Every board therefore shows an expected error for the model it doesn't have, ending in marked FAILED: not fitted (expected), this board has an …. On LTR-390UV boards the LTR-303 driver's config dump also prints Communication failed just before it. The README explains both.

Needs hardware validation before promoting to stable

  • Flash this beta to an LTR-303 board. Check that Light Sensor Model reads LTR-303ALS, that only LTR303 Light appears, and that the factory self-test goes green. Also check that lux values look sane next to an LTR390 board in the same spot, in both dim and bright light. If the lux readings are off, set glass_attenuation_factor on the ltr_als_ps block.
    • Done 2026-11-05, except the side-by-side lux comparison with an LTR390 board, which hasn't been done yet.
  • OTA this beta onto an existing LTR390 board. Check that entity IDs, history and the self-test are unchanged and that Light Sensor Model reads LTR-390UV.
    • Done 2026-11-05 (stable 26.10.12.1 → this build over Wi-Fi). Entity names unchanged and Light Sensor Model reads LTR-390UV. The self-test wasn't re-run on this board.

Follow-ups in other repos (not in this PR)

  • docs: add LTR303 Light, LTR303 Update Interval and Light Sensor Model to the MSR-2 sensor definitions.
  • FlashScripts: the MSR-2/flash-prod.sh comments still say "LTR390 light (>10 lux) + UV". Mention LTR-303 boards (light only), and say that a failing LTR-303 unit can take up to ~15 s to show red.
  • HomeyApp: ltr303_light should already map to luminance through device-class inference. Adding it to the explicit map next to ltr390_light would match the existing setup.
  • Datasheets: add the LTR-303ALS-01 datasheet.

Hardware test results (2026-11-05)

Each board's entity list was read from its web server, which lists the same entities Home Assistant gets over the API.

Notes for review:

  • UV Index. Light with no UV in it reads 0 UVI: indoors, or sun through glass. On the same board in the same spot, stable 26.10.12.1 also read 0, so this PR doesn't cause it. In open sun this build read 0.39–0.59 UVI, and the chip's PART_ID register reads 0xB2 (a genuine LTR-390UV).
  • Known and unchanged. LTR390 Light caps at 8738 lx in direct sun, which is the ceiling of ESPHome's default ALS gain (X18). This is pre-existing and deliberately left alone, so live automations see no change in lux readings.
  • USB flashing on macOS. After esphome upload over USB, the ESP32-C3 can stay in its "waiting for download" bootloader. Replug it, or flash with esptool's --after watchdog-reset.

Build check (local)

  • esphome config passes for all 5 YAMLs (standard, BLE, Factory and both beta-channel variants) on ESPHome 2026.8.0 (min_version) and 2026.10.2 (stable).
  • esphome compile succeeds for MSR-2, MSR-2_BLE and MSR-2_Factory on 2026.10.2 with no warnings from the generated code, and for MSR-2 on 2026.8.0 (only the expected set_internal deprecation warning).
  • Size cost compared with current beta (Factory image, 2026.10.2): +7.1 KB flash (93.1% → 93.5%, ~116 KB still free) and +0.45 KB RAM.
  • Reviewed by a multi-agent adversarial pass (boot timing, back-compat, factory test, code correctness). The two issues it upheld are fixed: LTR390 boards keep the 5 s self-test window, and the expected "not fitted" log error is now labelled and documented.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for MSR-2 boards with either the LTR-390UV or LTR-303ALS light sensor. The firmware detects the fitted sensor at startup and displays readings for the available sensor.
    • Added a Light Sensor Model diagnostic showing which sensor was detected. LTR-303ALS boards provide light readings but do not provide a UV Index.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated self-tests to check light readings from either sensor, accommodate boards without a UV sensor, and allow additional test cycles for LTR-303ALS-only boards.

The LTR-390UV is discontinued and newer MSR-2 boards carry an LTR-303ALS
(light only, no UV). One image now serves both boards. At boot it probes
the I2C bus at 0x53 and 0x29 and hides the entities of the chip that isn't
fitted (set_internal, before the API lists entities). It also marks that
chip's driver failed so its setup is skipped. Entities are hidden only
when the other chip answered, so a live LTR390 device can never lose its
entities because of a missed probe.

Existing entity names are unchanged, so live devices keep their entity
IDs, history, automations and stored update interval. New entities:
LTR303 Light, LTR303 Update Interval, and a Light Sensor Model
diagnostic.

The factory self-test accepts light from either chip and passes UV on
LTR-303 boards. LTR-303 boards get a 15 s window (LTR390 boards keep 5 s).
The LTR-303 starts at 8X gain, so indoor readings skip several
one-second auto-gain steps.

Bump version to 26.11.5.1.

When neither light sensor answers at boot, the firmware keeps every

Hardware test on an LTR-390UV board showed the disabled LTR-303 driver
logs "Communication failed" before the "not fitted (expected)" FAILED
line, so the README no longer promises exactly one error.
