Is there a requirement that all these holidays be described as either fixed or algorithmic, or is it acceptable to just make an API request to data.gov.au and pull down their data?
In general, Holidata aims to provide its holiday data without the use of any middle party, i.e. we take the holiday definition direclty from its source: the law that defines it.
Looking at data.gov.au you can see in the disclaimer:
The data in this dataset is manually collected and combined in a csv format from the following state and territory portals ... We try our best to ensure that the public holidays are up-to-date and correct, however we cannot guarantee the accuracy due to changing circumstances within each state and territory. ...
If we already have to check the data whether it is correct, we can cut this short by simply implementing the definition provided by the law ourself – and this is what Holidata does.
The Australian Government provides public holiday data for both humans
