Add deploy/stacks/stargate-dev, a five-region Stargate development stack, and stargate-dev-bench, a Pod-based Rust benchmark controller for comparing routing algorithms against it. - Helmfile stack with hub router, dev worker auth, MockDC clusters running the batched MockDynamo engine behind Pylon, and Grafana Alloy/AMP observability. deploy.py runs phased applies with preflight checks; observability.py prints a values snippet. - Connected regions share one credential bundle, routingKey, and router CA so Pylons can register with peer hubs. - Benchmark controller (Rust 1.97.0): plans suites, runs campaigns in a Spark Pod, resumes and reconciles after interruption, and renders summary.json and summary.txt. - llm-request-router chart: optional backend-router LoadBalancer Service, auth.existingSecret, upstream CA path, image ref helper, Vault ConfigMap fix, and render tests. - stargate-dev-auth binary and Bazel image replace stargate-worker-auth-gateway; the Dockerfile image no longer ships that fixture. Add a Bazel mock-dynamo image target. - CI runs the stack render tests, benchmark fmt/clippy/test, and the router chart render tests. New benchmark dependencies (exact pins): anyhow 1.0.103, clap 4.6.1, rustix 1.1.5, serde 1.0.228, serde_json 1.0.150, serde_yaml_ng 0.10.0, sha2 0.10.9, tempfile 3.27.0, time 0.3.47, tokio 1.52.3, uuid 1.22.0. Relates to #1420 Co-authored-by: Barry Greengus <bgreengus@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Let deploy/stacks/stargate-dev run on one Linux workstation with Docker only, no AWS and no GPUs, so routing changes can be exercised across clusters without the EKS deployment. - environments/local-a.yaml and local-b.yaml set platform: local. Each region is one hub and two MockDC k3d clusters on a shared Docker network, and the two hubs are connected. - In local mode the registration Service uses k3s ServiceLB instead of the AWS NLB. Registration gRPC on 50071 is plaintext (the router serves h2c there; on AWS the NLB terminates TLS); QUIC on 50072 still uses the local CA. The observability phase is refused. - scripts/local.py: up (network, loopback-bound registry and API servers, clusters, CA, router certificates, Secrets, credentials), images (Bazel build, push to the local registry, per-region values files with digests and hub addresses) and down (delete by exact name). - deploy.py skips the AWS and EKS checks for local regions and rejects values files that set platform. The benchmark accepts local regions and rejects topologies that mix local and AWS regions. - README documents prerequisites (including host capnp for Bazel), measured resource use, commands and limitations. AWS environments render byte-identical to before. Relates to #1420 Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
local.py images took each hub's router.address from docker inspect on the k3d server container. Read the hub node's InternalIP through the hub kube context instead, which is where k3s ServiceLB answers. The deploy steps no longer depend on Docker internals; Docker is still used to create the clusters and registry and to push images. The chart now pins backendRouter.image.tag by default, and any backendRouter.image field turns off digest inheritance. The dev stack therefore rendered the backend router as <repository>:<pinned tag> instead of repository@digest: an image the local registry never receives, or a different build than the router on AWS. Clear backendRouter.image.tag in the stack so both workloads run the same digest-pinned image. Clear it in the chart's digest render check as well, and document that the main digest reaches the backend router only when every backendRouter.image field is empty. This branch replaces stargate-worker-auth-gateway with stargate-dev-auth, but scripts/e2e-last-cluster.sh still started the removed binary and failed its own preflight. Start stargate-dev-auth from a generated config instead. Both Pylons map to the same routing key, so they share one worker token, and Stargate sends the fixture's service token from a secrets file. Several apply failures surfaced as unrelated errors or late Helm timeouts. Check the prerequisites up front and say how to fix them: - Check the AWS account ID before deriving the ACM ARN prefix from it, so a missing account no longer reads as an ACM mismatch. - Require two Ready schedulable nodes in each MockDC cluster before the mockdc phase; the backends use required anti-affinity. - Require an active AMP workspace and both IAM roles before the observability phase. - Name the observed ingress IPs and the recovery steps when the local registration Service is not on router.address. - Reject values files that override region, namespace, modelName, routingKey, or clusters. The benchmark reads the checked-in environment files, so an override split deploy and verify targets. - Drop the exact EKS version pin, which blocked every apply after a minor upgrade without protecting anything. - Require TLS 1.2 or newer on the registration NLB listener. Document NetworkPolicy enforcement as a hub prerequisite and add an AWS teardown section covering the releases, the NLB, the AMP workspace, and the IAM roles. - deploy.py: fold the two credential helpers into check_credentials, run helmfile through run(), and share one cli() error handler with local.py and observability.py. - local.py: derive each image's loaded tag from its Bazel target and inline single-use helpers. - helmfile: read the environment list from environments/ and build the metrics collector list without dict and append. - dev auth chart: drop the unused http Service port. Probes and Alloy reach the Pod port directly. - tests: import the scripts as modules from one path, patch only deploy.run, render the class fixture through helmfile(), look up resources with find(), and share one credentials constant. Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Accept Spark reports through one accept_report() used both when a stream finishes and when a receipt is loaded, and drop report::verify_accepted. - Restart and wait for cache-reset targets through restart_and_wait(), and iterate a region's clusters through Region::all_clusters(). - Make the Spark Pod lookup fail when the Pod is missing, hash remote workloads without a separate existence probe (one fewer exec per workload), and share one named-element lookup for containers and statuses. - Print the observed replica count and Service ports when verify rejects them. - Share the kubectl response helper and the healthy us-west-2 fixture between the unit and execution tests, and stop registering hub-only reads on the MockDC contexts. local.py sent any subcommand other than up or images to down, so a future subcommand would silently delete clusters. Map down by name. Rename observability.py's nested run so it is not mistaken for the deploy.run subprocess helper. Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…notation Stargate reads the load-balancer config only at startup. Document that setting loadBalancer.config adds the checksum/load-balancer-config Pod annotation so the router Pods roll when the policy changes, and that releases already setting config see one rollout on upgrade. The stack inlined a router policy (max_queued 1 with queue-time floor and ceiling) while the documented benchmark run checks the router against loadtest/queue-bounds-none-max-queued-4.json and the README asked operators to copy that JSON into router.loadBalancerConfig. Read that JSON file as the default policy so a default deployment passes --expected-config. A non-empty router.loadBalancerConfig still replaces it. Rendering fails if the default policy does not configure modelName. The rendered config ends with a newline so the checksum annotation hashes the ConfigMap content. The render test now compares the deployed policy with the JSON file. Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
suite.yaml and reduced.yaml both defined session-affinity and capacity suites with different workloads, so a suite name did not identify a workload without its file. Prefix the reduced file's single-scenario suites with reduced-, and drop suite.yaml's capacity, cache-affinity, long-context, and session-affinity subsets of canonical. suite.yaml keeps smoke, the quick check the tests plan, and canonical. Every scenario kind is still used by canonical or session-ramp.yaml. Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ures - accept_report checks smoke and warm-up failures with a plain conditional instead of a negated boolean. - load_receipt's verify closure declares its Result return type. - restart_and_wait takes Deployment names and formats deployment/<name> itself. - The shared healthy us-west-2 test fixture reads contexts, cluster names, namespace, model, and routing key from environments/us-west-2.yaml instead of repeating them. Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The list subcommand printed suite scenarios after "rate caps:", which read as rate limits. Print them after "scenarios:" and reword the test fixture comment to say it reads the embedded environment file. The code compares
service_tokenandworker_tokenwith==. This comparison stops at the first differing byte. A network client could in theory use response timing to recover a token. The service is a development fixture, so the risk is low. A constant-time compare, such assubtle::ConstantTimeEq, removes the risk. The crate must also be added to the dependencies. Also applies to: 126-132

With service.type=LoadBalancer the Service loses the health port, but the ServiceMonitor still scrapes health. If both are on you get no metrics and no error. Also, the last commit is missing DCO.
Skip revision comparisons for components whose image digests and runtime settings match the merge base, since identical builds measure only noise. Limit benchmarks to changed components and the profiles that exercise them, define a worse result relative to baseline variation, note unseeded routing policies such as PowerOfN, and cap inconclusive follow-ups at one extra pair before asking the user to decide. TL;DR
Add a repeatable Stargate development stack and a Rust benchmark controller for
testing routing policies with mock inference backends. The stack supports five
AWS regions and a local two-region k3d deployment. This supersedes #1519.
Additional Details (optional for docs, build, test, refactor, ci, chore, style, and revert PRs)
Routing policy changes need a controlled multi-cluster environment, resumable
campaigns, and retained measurements. This change supplies those pieces:
deploy/stacks/stargate-dev: phased Helmfile deployment of hub routers, worker authentication, MockDC clusters running MockDynamo and Pylon, and
optional AWS observability. Preflight validates credentials, CA bundles,
digest pins, protected values, and AWS account/resources.
stargate-dev-bench: a standalone Rust controller that generates deterministicworkloads, runs Spark in a Pod, verifies deployment/cache controls, reconciles
interrupted work, and renders accepted raw reports offline.
Secrets, upstream CA configuration, digest validation, and a load-balancer
configuration checksum that rolls routers when their startup policy changes.
A separate internal Service preserves backend-router ServiceMonitor scraping
in LoadBalancer mode without exposing the health port publicly.
stargate-dev-auth: development worker-auth RPC service with constant-timetoken comparison, graceful shutdown, and initialized request metrics. It
replaces the old worker-auth fixture in images and the loopback test.
images, and isolated CA/Secret generation. MockDC keeps two backend Pods with
different simulated capacities and prefers separate nodes; both may schedule
on one node with enough resources.
Stargate changes require runtime mock validation and relevant changes require
repeated baseline/candidate performance evidence before readiness or merge.
The performance gate is scoped to components whose image digests or runtime
settings differ from the merge base, judges results against baseline
variation, and caps inconclusive follow-ups at one extra pair.
Customer release notes: Adds a development deployment and benchmark workflow
for Stargate routing experiments. Existing ClusterIP chart users retain their
Service behavior. Releases with
loadBalancer.configreceive a router rollouton upgrade because the policy checksum is new.
Plan summary: AWS uses one hub and two MockDC clusters per region, with three
main routers, three backend routers, one auth service per hub, and two backends
per MockDC. Connected regions share credentials, routing identity, and router
CA. Observability uses Grafana Alloy and Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus.
Local mode creates six k3d clusters for two regions and refuses observability.
Usage: See the development stack guide
for prerequisites, phased deployment, local operation, campaigns, and teardown.
For the Reviewer
Review the shared chart templates/helpers and values, the new dev-auth binary
and fixture removal, and

The CodeRabbit digest validation and performance-guidance findings are addressed.
Performance evidence is linked below. Bora's LoadBalancer/ServiceMonitor finding

no additional revision-level performance comparison is required for it.
The current validation report
retains individual results, raw numerical reports, prompt hashes, image/resource
controls, policy, workloads, source adapters, and proxy-log observations.
Pods Ready on the same node in each MockDC. Both hubs discover all eight
backends. Streaming probes pass 192/192 requests and observe every backend
through each hub. Controller smoke passes 64/64 requests with zero failures
or retries, plus acceptance and offline rendering.
candidate/baseline, baseline/candidate. Both policies run 5,760 requests at
48 RPS and 1,536 affinity requests at 24 RPS under identical frozen controls.
All twelve campaigns accept 87,552/87,552 requests, with zero failures,
timeouts, cancellations, or retries.
investigates tail variation, separately from the primary sequence. All four
arms accept 6,144/6,144 requests. Ten on-wire auth probes complete 200,000 valid
RPCs and reject missing service auth and unknown workers.
Bazel Pylon and Stargate suites: pass. The controller's fmt, Clippy, and
70 unit/execution/planning tests also pass in CI.
No consistent revision-specific latency regression is established; this is not
statistical equivalence or a blanket performance pass. WaW affinity's primary
median TTFT p95/p99 rises 2.048/3.072 ms, while the focused pair reverses the
direction. PowerOfN has mixed primary tails and worse focused tails, all retained
in the report. Routing draws are unseeded. The comparison uses fixed offered
loads, not saturation capacity. Its frozen harness isolates the auth revision
and does not compare historical chart settings or node-topology capacity.
Auth working set increases by 0.6152 MiB across two Pods, about 0.3076 MiB per
Pod on average, with the new HTTP health/metrics service. Merge was requested
after this measured resource tradeoff and the latency variation were disclosed.
GitHub checks are green at
6ec3158b8e4b68f8bcd7cba0d33adc2cb80d85dd.The earlier runtime/performance candidate passed its checks. The current fix
passes the full chart render target and Helm lint; its regression fails against
the original template.
The current chart runtime receipt
also records a passing live Prometheus Operator regression: the
original monitor has zero targets; the fixed chart scrapes all three backend
routers in LoadBalancer and ClusterIP modes, then succeeds after restoration.
Health stays off the public LoadBalancer, and all application Pod templates
remain unchanged. Streaming passes another 192/192 requests across both hubs,
both policies, and all eight backends per hub.
Earlier validation at
1a531da02also covered local and five-region AWS mockdeployment, all-backend streaming probes, and controller interrupt/reconcile/
resume. AWS releases were restored to saved revisions after those runs. The
current validation used an isolated local environment and made no AWS changes.
QA limits: mock measurements qualify the reported workload and environment.
AWS observability provisioning/upgrades, production capacity, real-model
performance, full canonical suites, and scheduled session ramps remain
unvalidated. The validated Spark 0.3.8 image lacks the controller's rate-step
flag, so the performance comparison uses fixed-count sustained and affinity
workloads with complete request draining. Co-located backends share host
resources. Baseline packaging/auth adapters and the frozen comparison harness
are described in the report.
Other operator notes: connected hubs need registration/watch reachability;
local registration is h2c and QUIC uses the local CA. Local images need host
capnp; operators supply a compatible Spark image. Rerun local image/valuegeneration after node-address changes. Existing deployments using old
unprefixed observability IAM role names must regenerate values and reapply
observability. Pulsar rows are unpaired with WaW by the controller CLI.
