fix(query-core): prevent re-notifying observers when unstable selector throws same error - #12533
When a select function throws, createResult previously computed errorUpdatedAt with Date.now() on every call. For components passing an unstable inline select function, re-renders create new function instances which lead setOptions to re-run the selector and refresh errorUpdatedAt.
Because errorUpdatedAt changed on each evaluation, shallowEqualObjects returned false and notified observer subscribers, triggering useSyncExternalStore to schedule another render and leading to an infinite render loop in scenarios where multiple observers listen to the same query.
This change preserves the existing select error and its errorUpdatedAt timestamp when the re-thrown error matches the previously stored error, avoiding spurious subscriber notifications and infinite re-render loops while still notifying if a genuinely different error is thrown.
Changes
In QueryObserver, keep track of #selectErrorUpdatedAt.
Add hasErrorChanged to compare consecutive selector errors across Error instances and plain objects.
Preserve the stored #selectError and #selectErrorUpdatedAt when the error has not changed.
Add regression unit tests in queryObserver.test.tsx and integration coverage in useQuery.test.tsx.
Add changeset for @tanstack/query-core.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Prevented repeated notifications and unnecessary component updates when a selector repeatedly throws the same error, including during rerenders.
Notifications continue when the selector error changes, so updated error details are reflected in query results.
QueryObserver now compares stored selector errors and retains their timestamp when the same error recurs. Regression tests cover observer notifications and React component rerenders.

Summary
Compare selector errors and retain timestamps packages/query-core/src/queryObserver.ts
QueryObserver compares selection errors and updates the stored error and timestamp only when the error changes. It resets the timestamp when clearing the error and reuses it when exposing the stored error.
Verify notification and rerender behavior packages/query-core/src/__tests__/queryObserver.test.tsx, packages/react-query/src/__tests__/useQuery.test.tsx, .changeset/query-core-selector-error-loop.md
Tests verify that the same error does not cause another observer notification, a different error does, and rerendering with an unstable selector adds one result. The changeset describes the fix.
TanStack/query#11536: Changes how QueryObserver handles stored selector errors when select is removed or returns a value.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#12532] The observer preserves the error and timestamp for equivalent simple errors. Core and React regression tests cover repeated selector errors. However, hasErrorChanged compares Error.cause by reference. An unstable selector that throws new Error('outer', { cause: new Error('inner') }) creates a new cause on every evaluation. The observer then stores a new error and can notify subscribers on every render, so the render loop can persist.
Resolution
Keep equivalent nested causes stable across selector evaluations while exposing meaningful cause changes. Add a regression test for an unstable selector that creates a new error with an equivalent cause on each evaluation.

Clear the selector error when select is removed.
If a selector throws and setOptions removes it while cached data remains, the observer keeps returning the obsolete error instead of the cached data. The retained timestamp can also suppress subscriber notifications. Clear the selector error on removal and ensure re-adding the selector does not reuse stale memoized state.

Update QueryObserver’s setOptions handling so removing select clears
#selectError and #selectErrorUpdatedAt even when cached data remains. Also
invalidate the selector’s memoized state on removal so re-adding select
recomputes from current data rather than reusing stale state.
This test always throws the same Error object. Add a rerender case that throws new Error('Select Error') each time. A regression in optimistic-result stabilization for fresh errors could cause repeated React updates while this test still passes.

Detect meaningful changes in selector errors.
When a replacement selector throws an error with the same name and message but a different cause, the observer retains the first error. Consumers can receive the wrong cause, and throwOnError can make the wrong decision. Preserve meaningful error changes without reintroducing notifications for equivalent errors.

…r throws same error
When a select function throws, createResult previously set errorUpdatedAt
to Date.now() on every execution. For components passing an inline select
callback, each re-render generates a new function instance, causing
setOptions to re-run select and bump errorUpdatedAt.
Because errorUpdatedAt changed, shallowEqualObjects evaluated to false and
notified subscribers, triggering useSyncExternalStore to schedule another
render and creating an infinite render loop.
Preserve the existing select error and errorUpdatedAt when the re-thrown
error matches the stored error (checking identity, name/message, cause, and
properties), avoiding spurious subscriber notifications.
