Show verified document freshness and tested versions - #1264
Show optional authored update dates and exact tested-package versions on documentation pages, and use the same validated date for sitemap lastmod. Missing or invalid facts remain absent. Old cached manifests remain compatible.
Reference pages do not inherit source-only tested-version claims. A reference date is emitted only when every source in the chain has a valid date, using the latest date. Added author maintenance rules and tests for invalid dates, moving version ranges, per-page changes, cache compatibility, and reference provenance.
Based on #1263, the local directory bridge fix. Merge that first and retarget to main. TanStack/router#8387 supplies the first source-backed Query recipe metadata.
Validation: full site checks passed (523 tests, 3 skips, types/lint clean). Headless HTTP checks verified framework docs, generic docs, references, undated pages, and matching sitemap dates. Mobile metadata layout was inspected. Temporary local fixtures were removed. Preview checks used the documented DISABLE_REDACT=true mode after the development Redact walker failed; no production performance claim is made.

New Features
Documentation pages can display their last substantive update date and the exact package versions tested for their examples.
Sitemap entries reflect documentation update dates. Referenced pages use freshness information from their source documents and remain undated when the reference chain lacks a date.
Invalid dates and package version entries are excluded from displayed freshness details.
Documentation
Added guidance for recording update dates and tested package versions, including how to handle rebuilds, references, and undated content.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
The change adds validated documentation freshness metadata. It records update dates in manifests and sitemaps, combines metadata across document references, and displays available dates and tested package versions on documentation pages.
Defines freshness metadata rules and validates dates and package versions. The docs manifest records per-page update dates, and sitemap entries use those dates. Tests cover metadata validation, collection, and manifest validation.
Freshness across document references src/utils/documents.server.ts, tests/docs-reference-freshness.test.ts
Combines update dates and tested package versions from referenced documents. Tests cover missing metadata, date selection, and package-version selection.
Freshness in documentation page data and display src/utils/docs.functions.ts, src/routes/_library/$libraryId/$version.docs.$.tsx, src/routes/_library/$libraryId/$version.docs.framework.$framework.$.tsx, src/components/Doc.tsx
The docs response includes parsed freshness. Both documentation routes pass it to Doc, which displays available update dates and tested package versions.
TanStack/tanstack.com#1153 — The changes add validated documentation dates to sitemap lastmod; they do not cover the issue’s other canonical URL checks.

Check references.length before you parse the front matter.
parseFrontMatter calls parseYaml, and parseYaml throws on invalid YAML. Line 587 runs before the empty-references early return. Today the only caller passes a non-empty array, so this is not reachable yet. Move the check first so the function does no extra work and has no failure mode on the no-op path.
Proposed fix
- const parsed = parseFrontMatter(text)
if (references.length === 0) return text
+ const parsed = parseFrontMatter(text)

Move the empty-`references` check before `parseFrontMatter(text)` in the
function shown in the diff. Return `text` without parsing when `references` is
empty, and keep the existing parsing flow for non-empty references.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject empty version identifiers.
If frontmatter contains testedWith: { react: '1.2.3-.' }, this regex accepts the value. The page then displays a malformed version as a tested package version. Require a nonempty identifier between dots in prerelease and build metadata, and cover both forms in the validation test.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Normalize directory before building child paths and parentPath.
readLocalDocsTree uses the raw directory value in path.posix.join and in parentPath. The old isolate-free implementation strips the leading slash with removeLeadingSlash, and the GitHub implementations do not use one. If fetchApiContents receives a startingPath with a leading slash, such as /docs, every returned path and _links.self starts with /. On Windows, path.resolve also accepts backslash input that the posix join keeps unchanged. Those paths no longer match the GitHub-shaped contract that menu and link consumers expect. Also, parentPath here is the parent directory. buildFileTree in src/utils/documents.server.ts builds an accumulated prefix that starts at '' and ends with /. The isolate and non-isolate local paths therefore return different parentPath values.
Check whether any consumer reads parentPath before you decide how to align it.

Merging this PR will not cause a version bump for any packages. If these changes should not result in a new version, you're good to go. If these changes should result in a version bump, you need to add a changeset.
Fixed the version validation in 1fab369. It now rejects empty prerelease/build identifiers and numeric identifiers with leading zeros, while accepting valid prerelease and build metadata. The regression cases and full pnpm test suite passed locally.
The directory-tree comment concerns code already merged in #1263. I checked the current endpoint: it rejects paths outside the repository before calling the tree reader, so the reported leading-slash output does not match that request path. The parentPath values do differ, but I found no reads of that property in src. I have not changed that contract as part of this fix.
CI and verification of the freshness UI are still pending.
Verified 1fab369 locally with synthetic documentation fixtures. The dated page renders its authored date and exact tested package version, and the undated page renders neither. A dated reference wrapper uses the later date and its own tested version; an undated wrapper does not inherit the source-only claims. All four routes returned 200, and their canonical sitemap entries use the same dates or omit lastmod for undated pages. I also checked the dated footer in the browser. These were metadata fixtures, not tests of the documented Router recipes.
CI is green on this head. The required sensitive-path review is still pending, so this is not ready to merge yet.

The freshness work is now updated against current main, keeping the newer documentation titles and sitemap filtering intact.
AI review notes:
Pushed 9ab40c9a8fd4ac418a552bd39b226e322b48ca96, merging main 9e87ce51f83ca9f7ed9c56b2090a982a184ef419. Both conflicts were competing imports; both sides were retained. The resulting diff remains scoped to freshness metadata and its tests.
Full pnpm test and normal commit hooks passed: type checks, lint, 703 unit tests, 2,278 chat tests and 20 desktop tests, with existing skips. Fresh CI is still finishing. This is not a production verification claim.
The date now follows the file the page actually serves, including when that file has no date.
AI review notes:
Independently confirmed the sibling .md file takes precedence over /index.md in the page loader. Concurrent manifest callbacks could previously publish the index date instead. The manifest now excludes that shadowed index date, while retaining dates for index-only pages.
The regression passes with the fix and fails without it. Full pnpm test and normal commit hooks passed. Fresh CI must finish on the pushed head before merge.
