Follow-up to #3059. This PR applies the decisions from the review threads about render, renderFrame and the container API.

Summary

The main rule: render never returns a frame. render draws the block's content. renderFrame draws the frame. The code that assembles a block (the node views and the HTML serializers) puts the content into the frame.

Changes

Container API

  • A container (container: true) declares only renderFrame. It cannot declare render, because it has no content. validateRenderHooks checks this at runtime.
  • A container's frame root is the block's element. It carries the block's attributes.
  • React frames get slotRef (before: contentRef). A React container renders through FrameNodeView, not through render.
  • A React toExternalHTML component gets childrenRef. It marks where the block's children go in the export, like core's childrenDOM. A container's toExternalHTML no longer gets contentRef, because a container has no content.

Frames

  • One slot marker (data-frame-slot) and one finder (findFrameSlot) replace data-frame-slot-todo and data-children-of.
  • A frame's dom must be an HTMLElement. Fragment support for frames is removed.
  • renderFrame's context no longer has blockContentDOMAttributes. No frame used it.
  • renderFrameDOM draws a frame outside the editor. Both HTML serializers use it.

HTML export

  • Every block exports its frame, unless the block has its own toExternalHTML. In that case, toExternalHTML replaces the content and the frame.
  • The spec's render returns only content. Both serializers call renderFrame themselves.
  • The spec has toExternalHTML only when the author wrote one. Without it, the external HTML serializer makes the default export.
  • External HTML treats containers like regular blocks. It has no data-node-type, data-id or data-frame-slot. Props stay as data-* attributes.
  • Columns get parse functions, so they still round-trip through external HTML.

Other

  • createBlockSpecFromTiptapNode no longer has the container, children and placeable options. Nothing used them.
  • The doc comment for render's update hook is main's text again. The previous text said that only containers use update. This was not correct.

Behavior changes

  • editor.schema.blockSpecs[type].implementation.toExternalHTML no longer falls back to render. A block without its own toExternalHTML has none.
  • A custom container without parse does not parse back from external HTML (blocksToHTMLLossy, pasted text/html). This is the same as for other custom blocks. Internal HTML round-trips as before.
  • Frame chrome (for example, button labels) is now in external HTML and Markdown. The test schema shows this in markdown/titledBlock/basic.md. We must decide how to handle this (see "Open items").

Snapshots

  • Most changes are the marker rename (data-children-of / data-frame-slot-todo to data-frame-slot).
  • Container exports in external HTML lose their BlockNote markers.
  • The titled block's external HTML and Markdown include its frame again.
  • In the schema snapshot, a container's spec has no render, and blocks without their own export have no toExternalHTML.

Open items

These are marked with TODO or FIXME in the code:

  • Frame chrome in external HTML: a convention for renderType: "dom", or export only the slot.
  • React builds the content node view inside render. An internal adapter hook, like frameNodeView, would let render only draw.
  • createFrameView returns a stand-in node view when the block has no frame. It should return NodeView | undefined.
  • createReactBlockSpec is still hard to read.
  • domAttributes.blockContent never reaches serialization. See BLO-1386.

Tests

  • Unit tests: core, React, multi-column, the tests package and all exporter packages.
  • Type-aware lint for the full repository.
  • Browser tests (Docker): containers, frames, toggles, side menu geometry, block colors, custom blocks, copy and paste, multi-column, exporters, drag handle.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Custom container blocks can now render a separate frame around their child blocks, with clearer placement controls for live editing and exported HTML.
    • Custom HTML export supports placing child blocks in a designated location within the exported content.
  • Improvements
    • Container parsing and HTML export better preserve child placement and block properties while removing editor-specific markup.
    • Documentation and examples now explain the updated container rendering and export options.

- A container (`container: true`) declares `renderFrame` only. `render` is
not permitted; `validateRenderHooks` checks this at runtime.
- `render` returns only the block's content. Both HTML serializers call
`renderFrame` themselves (`renderFrameDOM`): a container is its frame, and
a block with content goes into its frame's slot.
- The spec has `toExternalHTML` only when the author wrote one. Without it,
the external HTML serializer makes the default export (`render` in the
frame). One export rule: a frame is exported unless the block has its own
  `toExternalHTML`.
- External HTML treats containers like regular blocks: no `data-node-type`,
`data-id` or slot marker; props stay as `data-*`. Columns get `parse`
  functions, so they still round-trip.
- One slot marker (`data-frame-slot`) and one finder (`findFrameSlot`)
  replace `data-frame-slot-todo` and `data-children-of`.
- A frame's `dom` is an `HTMLElement`; fragment support for frames is gone.
`renderFrame`'s context no longer has `blockContentDOMAttributes`.
- React frames take `slotRef`. A React container renders through
  `FrameNodeView`, not through `render`.
- `createBlockSpecFromTiptapNode` drops the `container`, `children` and
  `placeable` options (no users).
- Restore main's doc comment for `render`'s `update` hook.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Container blocks now use renderFrame and marked frame slots to place child blocks. Core and React rendering, HTML serialization, parsing, examples, and documentation use the updated frame and child-placement contracts.

Changes

Frame-based container rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frame contracts and slot utilities
packages/core/src/schema/blocks/*, packages/core/src/schema/index.ts
Block implementations distinguish container renderFrame from non-container render. Shared utilities mark and find frame slots. Container parsing and render-hook validation use the updated contracts.
Live frame and child mounting
packages/core/src/pm-nodes/BlockContainer.ts, packages/core/src/schema/blocks/createSpec.ts, packages/react/src/schema/ReactBlockSpec.tsx, packages/react/src/components/Popovers/BlockPopover.tsx
Core and React node views render container frames and mount content through their slots. React frame props use slotRef in place of the container contentRef.
Internal and external HTML serialization
packages/core/src/api/exporters/html/util/*, packages/react/src/schema/ReactBlockSpec.tsx, tests/src/unit/react/*
Internal and external serializers place children in frame slots or export-declared child destinations. React export components receive childrenRef; tests cover child placement in exported HTML.
Examples, documentation, and validation updates
docs/content/docs/features/custom-schemas/*, examples/06-custom-schema/*, packages/core/src/**/*.test.ts, packages/react/src/**/*.test.tsx, packages/xl-*/src/*, tests/src/*
Examples and fixtures use renderFrame and slot. Tests and parser fixtures use the frame-slot marker and updated container export behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8edd6

Containers with a custom HTML export that does not mark where child blocks go can silently lose those children when content is copied or exported. This is a narrow case with a simple fix. It should be addressed, but it does not block the frame-rendering change.

- A React `toExternalHTML` component gets `childrenRef`, which marks where
the block's children go in the export. It maps to core's `childrenDOM`.
- A container's `toExternalHTML` no longer gets `contentRef`: it has no
  content.
- `renderToDOMSpec` is unchanged. The export wrapper marks the element and
finds it in the rendered DOM.
- Docs: describe `childrenRef`; fix `contest` to `context` in the type.
- sideMenuHover: the panel container declares `renderFrame` (a container
  has no `render`).
- xl-ai columnContainerDocumentState: external HTML has no BlockNote markers,
so check the column list's class instead of `data-node-type`.

Fix the grammar in the nestingLevel description.

The sentence "How deep the block being exported in nested inside other blocks" uses "in" where it needs "is".

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Container children are dropped when a custom export does not place them.

A container with its own toExternalHTML may return no childrenDOM. In React, this happens when the export does not use childrenRef, because takeMarked returns undefined. In that case:

  • childrenDOM is undefined.
  • A container node is not in the blockContent group.
  • The final branch calls ret.contentDOM?.append(childFragment).

A container has no contentDOM, because its type gives no contentRef, so this call does nothing. The child blocks are silently removed from external HTML, which includes clipboard copy. This breaks the documented contract in ReactBlockSpec.tsx Lines 111-114 ("Without childrenRef, the children follow the block") and in custom-blocks.mdx.

Fall back to placing the children after the block when no destination exists.
