ADFA-95

Answers ADFA-95, "can CoGo run Android Studio plugins?": no, not as-is - port them. Docs only.

What's in it

  • ADR 0018 - Android Studio plugins are ported to the CoGo plugin API, not run. Records why, and rejects an IntelliJ compatibility layer.
  • PLUGIN_AUTHORING.md, "Porting an Android Studio plugin" - maps plugin.xml extensions to CoGo extension interfaces and services, and lists what has no equivalent yet.
  • Index row in docs/adr/README.md; pointer from docs/plugin-api.md.

The ADR is 0018, not 0017: 0017 is taken on the open ADFA-174 branch.

Why not run them

Getting the bytecode loaded is easy - d8 and DexClassLoader already do it. What the bytecode calls is the problem:

  • Swing/AWT. android.jar (API 36) has no javax.swing and only two java.awt.font classes.
  • IntelliJ's IDE layer. The APK defines 8,304 IntelliJ classes, all relocated to org.jetbrains.kotlin.com.intellij.* by the Kotlin Analysis API jar. None is under com.intellij.*, and none of AnAction, ToolWindowFactory, Configurable, FileEditorProvider, LocalInspectionTool or the Android plugin is there at all.

How the claims were checked

  • Swing/AWT: listed the classes in android.jar (API 36).
  • IntelliJ classes: dexdump class definitions from the current v8 debug APK. Definitions, not string matches - the APK references 277 com.intellij.* types from other libraries but defines none.
  • Porting table: each row's interface traced to the host code that calls it. The LSP row lists only what ExternalLanguageServer implements; it has no hover or code actions.
  • Relative links and anchors in all four files resolve.

No UI change, so no font-scale check.

Worth a look, outside this PR

Three members of the documented plugin API have no caller in the IDE: EditorExtension, ProjectExtension and UIExtension.getContextMenuItems(). The porting guide leaves them out. markdown-preview-plugin overrides getContextMenuItems(), so its context-menu items never appear. Wiring them up or deprecating them is a separate decision.

Android Studio plugins can't run in CoGo. They are built on Swing, which
Android lacks, and on IntelliJ's IDE layer (AnAction, ToolWindowFactory,
Configurable, ...), which CoGo doesn't ship. The headless IntelliJ core
CoGo does ship is relocated to org.jetbrains.kotlin.com.intellij.*, so a
plugin wouldn't link to it either.

- ADR 0018 records the decision and the rejected compatibility layer.
It is 0018 because 0017 is taken on the open ADFA-174 branch.
- PLUGIN_AUTHORING.md gains "Porting an Android Studio plugin": a
plugin.xml-to-CoGo mapping, each row checked against the host code
that calls it, and the gaps with no equivalent yet.

📝 Summary
  • Added ADR 0018, which states that Android Studio plugins must be ported to the CoGo plugin API and cannot run as-is.
  • Added a porting guide that maps Android Studio extension points to CoGo APIs and identifies unsupported or incomplete features.
  • Added links to ADR 0018 in the ADR index and plugin API documentation.
  • Risk: Plugins that rely on unsupported features, such as editor context-menu actions, quick fixes, hover, or Android-plugin-specific functionality, may need changes or may not work in CoGo. The documentation also notes that some CoGo extension points have no IDE callers.

The documentation states that CoGo does not run Android Studio or IntelliJ plugins. It describes porting plugin behavior to CoGo APIs or supported integrations, maps extension points to available options, and identifies unsupported or limited equivalents.

Change: Other

Suggested reviewers: hal-eisen-adfa

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e011a

The documentation should qualify these two guarantees before merge so plugin authors do not rely on incorrect licensing or restart expectations.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e011a

This documentation-only change does not introduce a plugin runtime, new execution path, or additional privileges. It directs ports toward existing APIs without weakening their controls. No security finding was established for this PR; existing plugin trust and process isolation remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The mapped execution surface is local host-side process creation using plugin-controlled command arguments and environment entries. A workspace working directory is not evidence of filesystem confinement. Effective process identity and maximum accessible assets remain unverified; the PR does not expand this execution surface.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A local installation flow asks for user confirmation, but the loader logs signature validation failure and continues with a development allowance. These preexisting controls do not establish universal provenance authorization across all installation routes, and the new porting guidance does not modify them.

🟡 Minor · Qualify the language-server restart guarantee. · PLUGIN_AUTHORING.md:364

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Qualify the language-server restart guarantee.

The host retries only after a successfully initialized session ends. Process-start and initialization failures return from start() without creating a session or entering onSessionEnded. Plugin authors cannot rely on automatic retries for startup failures.

Suggested fix
-**Server.** Any stdio language server. A bare command resolves against the Termux `bin` directory; an absolute path runs as is. It starts when the first matching file opens, with the Termux environment plus `environment`, and is restarted up to twice if it crashes. Needs `system.commands`. Environment variable names must be non-empty and contain no `=` or NUL, and values no NUL, or the language is not registered. Install the server yourself, for example with `IdeCommandService`.

Update the Server description to limit the restart guarantee to sessions that
exit unexpectedly after successful initialization; do not imply that
process-start or initialization failures are retried. Keep the surrounding
startup, environment, and permission details unchanged.

- **Swing and AWT do not exist on Android.** `android.jar` (API 36) has no `javax.swing`, and of `java.awt` only `java.awt.font.TextAttribute` and `NumericShaper`. A plugin with a tool window, dialog or settings page fails on its first UI call.
- **The IDE layer that plugins extend is absent.** CoGo already runs IntelliJ's headless core on device, inside the Kotlin Analysis API jar (`subprojects/kotlin-analysis-api`): PSI, VFS, `Application`, the extension area, `PluginManagerCore`. All of it is relocated to `org.jetbrains.kotlin.com.intellij.*` - the APK defines no class under `com.intellij.*` - so a plugin compiled against `com.intellij.*` does not link to it. It also has none of `AnAction`, `ToolWindowFactory`, `Configurable`, `FileEditorProvider` or `LocalInspectionTool`, and nothing of the Android plugin.
- **The target moves.** A compatibility layer would track a platform API that changes between releases, on a schedule CoGo does not control.
- **Distribution.** Plugins come from JetBrains Marketplace, which is online, under per-plugin licenses. Repackaging one for offline use needs its author's permission.

Qualify the redistribution claim.

Line 20 says repackaging a Marketplace plugin for offline use requires the author's permission. Marketplace plugins have individual license terms, and an open-source license can grant redistribution rights subject to its conditions. State that authors must check the applicable license and need separate permission only when that license does not allow redistribution. (plugins.jetbrains.com)
