Description

Add git gtr rm --dry-run / -n to inspect explicit removal targets before deleting them. The preview runs before hook dispatch and reports resolved paths, branch/detached HEAD, tracked changes, untracked files and lock status.

  • Never remove worktrees, files or branches; never execute preRemove/postRemove hooks or change trust state.
  • Warn that force can discard uncommitted/untracked files and that the existing single force cannot remove locked worktrees.
  • With --delete-branch, count branch commits not reachable from a verified default base. Reuse new's default remote/branch selection, prefer the remote-tracking ref, then its corresponding local branch; otherwise report unknown. No fetch.
  • Explicitly distinguish reachability from a merge verdict, including squash/rebase and stale-ref limitations.
  • Continue reporting valid targets after invalid ones, returning non-zero for failures.
  • Update README, command help and generated Bash/Zsh/Fish completions. No JSON mode or new runtime dependencies.

Normal removal behavior is unchanged.

Motivation

Related to #236, opened before this PR for core-feature discussion. There is no maintainer feedback yet; this is a draft implementation for that discussion, not a claim that the proposal has been approved.

clean --merged --dry-run previews PR-based bulk cleanup. This addresses selected rm targets without requiring users to assemble path, status, lock and history checks manually.

Type of Change

  • New feature (non-breaking)
  • Documentation update

Current validation

Commit 6fb31af7fcb8f24ca18f31a2f2f373a9c3d28b7b merges upstream main, preserves literal Bash target completion for rm after preview flags, and explicitly warns that status.showUntrackedFiles=no can permit deletion without --force.

  • Full BATS directory, 41 files run separately with isolated config: 910 passed, 13 skipped, 0 failed.
  • All 18 completion tests passed, including the interactive Bash Readline regression and literal branch names after rm -n. Generated completions and Bash/Zsh syntax checks passed.
  • ShellCheck and Fish syntax were unavailable locally. GitHub Actions run #350 reported action_required with no jobs run when checked.

Review follow-up validation

Commit 9b7676b3a4952e855e67666afd417fe7d74f5f0c addresses the filter-driver caveat, configuration-dependent untracked-file protection, Bash/Zsh rm completion, and the stat-stale index fixture. Adds regression tests for hidden untracked files and Bash/Zsh completion paths; generated completion assets are updated with their source.

  • Full directory, 35 BATS files run separately with isolated Git/XDG configuration and private working directories: 764 passed, 8 skipped, 0 failed, every file exit 0. Seven skips require Fish (not installed); one requires macOS ACL syntax.
  • Final help/completion recheck: 26 passed. Bash and Zsh syntax checks, generated-completion --check, and git diff --check: exit 0.
  • Manual controls confirm stat-stale index preservation (ordinary Git status refreshes the same fixture), and preview preservation/advisory output with status.showUntrackedFiles=no before actual removal follows Git settings.
  • ShellCheck and Fish syntax checks could not be rerun in this environment because those executables are unavailable; CI must validate them. Zsh regression coverage exercises completion dispatch with stubs, not an interactive terminal session.

Initial implementation validation

Tested tree: 859509ba7fdd19ed0fab8d934c1f6028e389221a. The published head has the same tree as the local tested commit; only commit metadata differs.

Linux; Git 2.51.1; Bash 5.2.21; BATS 1.10.0; ShellCheck 0.10.0.

  • Focused BATS: tests/cmd_remove_preview.bats tests/cmd_remove.bats tests/cmd_help.bats tests/completion.bats — 52 passed, exit 0.
  • Full tests/ directory: all 35 BATS files, each run with isolated Git/XDG configuration and a private temporary working directory — 768 passed, 1 skipped, 0 failed, all file exits 0. The skip is macOS ACL syntax on Linux. This was a per-file full-directory run, not a successful single bats tests/ invocation.
  • shellcheck bin/gtr bin/git-gtr lib/*.sh lib/commands/*.sh adapters/editor/*.sh adapters/ai/*.sh — exit 0.
  • ./scripts/generate-completions.sh --check — exit 0.
  • Bash, Zsh and Fish syntax checks on generated completions — exit 0.
  • git diff --check — exit 0.
  • Final overview-help text addition: tests/cmd_help.bats — 16 passed.
  • CLI smoke using both git gtr and bin/gtr: create a slash-named branch, preview a dirty worktree with branch deletion requested, verify preservation and inert hooks, then perform real removal and verify both hooks and branch deletion — exit 0.
  • The same CLI smoke under Linux-built Bash 3.2.0 — exit 0. BATS itself failed to parse under that old Bash build, so no Bash 3.2 BATS pass is claimed.

The 14 new deterministic tests cover file/ref/registry/index preservation, hooks and trust state, fsmonitor suppression, dirty/untracked/ignored files, locked worktrees with force, configured/default/missing base refs, squash merge, detached HEAD, missing directories and mixed valid/invalid targets.

Initial environment attempts are not counted as passes: running from this environment's group-writable /workspace caused existing configuration-safety checks to reject initialization tests. Running each test file from a private temporary directory resolved that without repository changes.

Manual Testing Checklist

  • Linux
  • macOS
  • Windows Git Bash
  • Create worktree
  • Preview removal without effects
  • Perform real removal and verify hooks/branch deletion

Test Steps

  1. Create a disposable repository and git gtr new feature/auth --from HEAD --no-fetch --no-copy --no-hooks.
  2. Add an untracked file and preRemove/postRemove hooks that write markers.
  3. Run git gtr rm feature/auth -n --force --delete-branch.
  4. Verify the file, worktree and branch remain, with no hook markers; inspect the warnings and reachability count.
  5. Run actual removal with --force --delete-branch --yes; verify both hooks execute and the worktree/branch are removed.

Expected and observed behavior matched.

Checklist

  • Read CONTRIBUTING.md and repository agent instructions
  • Opened Feature: preview explicit worktree removal with rm --dry-run #236 for discussion first (scope approval still pending)

Walkthrough

Adds git gtr rm --dry-run and -n to inspect explicit worktree-removal targets. The preview reports worktree state and lock status without removing worktrees or running removal hooks. With --delete-branch, it reports commit reachability against a verified local base.

Suggested reviewers: natoboram

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4e4cf

The dry-run preview is non-destructive and ordinary removal is unchanged. Some documentation and warning wording about untracked files, plus one test-coverage gap, remain open. These are worth tightening before merge but do not block it.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4e4cf

The preview is separated from deletion and removal-hook execution. Its main limitation is that Git-configured filters may still execute with the invoking user's permissions, so preview is not a sandboxed inspection.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Direct inspection is scoped to selected registered worktrees and local repository refs. Configured Git filter subprocesses are not sandboxed by preview, so their possible effects extend to resources accessible to the invoking user rather than being confined to the selected worktree.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The remaining execution path is selected worktree inspection through Git status into a configured clean/process filter. Its possibility is explicitly documented. The inspected evidence does not establish attacker control over the filter command or an elevation of authority, so this is not retained as an introduced vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Preview skips removal-hook dispatch rather than granting hook trust. The existing distinction between user-controlled Git configuration and trust-gated .gtrconfig hooks remains intact. The public-entrypoint ranges in the test file describe test setup and CLI invocation, not an additional production execution boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure, repetition, or interruption of the direct preview flow cannot advance to removal because every preview iteration bypasses the destructive sequence. This containment does not provide rollback for side effects of configured external filters.

Bash completion skips rm flags and targets after a leading flag.

In _git_gtr, the cword -eq 3 branch runs before the cur == -* branch. As a result, git gtr rm --dry<TAB> returns branch names, not --dry-run. git gtr rm -n <TAB> returns nothing. This branch order predates the PR, which only adds flags to a branch that already has this gap.

Offer worktree targets after preview flags in Zsh rm completion.

After git gtr rm -n , the Zsh rm branch offers only option names. It has no positional action, so worktree targets are not offered. Add '*:target:->worktrees' and a case "$state" handler, as the copy spec does. Then regenerate completions/_git-gtr.

Add a stat-stale tracked file so the index assertion covers the status refresh.

The fixture creates no tracked files, so git status has no stat-stale tracked index entry to refresh before before_index is captured. The index-hash assertion therefore does not detect removal of GIT_OPTIONAL_LOCKS=0 from the preview status call. Commit a file, then change its mtime without changing its content. Keep this setup before the index snapshot.

Enforce the untracked-file check in remove_worktree, or limit the README claim.

With status.showUntrackedFiles=no, git worktree remove without --force treats the worktree as clean and deletes its untracked files. The README now says untracked files block removal without --force. The dry-run preview reports "Blocked without --force" for the same worktree, but removal still proceeds. Add an explicit --untracked-files=all status check before git worktree remove in remove_worktree, or state that the protection depends on Git status settings.

Warn that untracked files can be deleted without --force.

With status.showUntrackedFiles=no, Git can remove the worktree and its untracked files without --force. The preview says they may not block removal, but its deletion warning mentions only --force. State explicitly that untracked files can be deleted without it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Report unknown when shallow history prevents an exact count.

If a shallow clone contains the base and branch tips but omits intermediate commits, both ref checks pass and git rev-list --count can report too few commits. Git treats a shallow boundary as a root commit. Check whether the relevant history is complete before presenting an exact count; otherwise report unknown. (git-scm.com)

Based on learnings, shallow Git history can silently omit older commits from a history walk.

Review comment at @lib/commands/remove.sh at line 162:
Update the commit-count logic using base_ref and base_oid so it checks whether
the history needed for the base-to-branch count is complete before treating git
rev-list --count as exact. When shallow boundaries could omit commits, report
the count as unknown; preserve exact counts for complete history.

Keep both sets of completion tests. Report unknown when a shallow boundary can affect either side of the branch reachability count.
