fix: protect validated branch tips during cleanup - #243
After git gtr clean --merged or --closed validates a PR/MR tip, a preRemove hook can commit new work or change branches. Cleanup previously removed the worktree and could force-delete the newer, unmatched branch tip.
Revalidate branch identity and commit after preRemove, skipping removal if the state changed or cannot be verified, including with --force. Delete the branch using git update-ref --no-deref -d with the validated old tip so a concurrent update makes deletion fail safely. Preserve checked-out, rebase, and bisect protections, hook ordering, and branch metadata on failed deletion.
Motivation
Addresses bug-scan finding 16 (ccf1b4ce-b0cb-492b-a6c3-c51eb09376e0): protect commits added after provider validation. The existing initial-tip lookup protection remains unchanged.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
Testing
bats tests/cmd_clean.bats: all 56 tests pass, including 15 new regression cases.
ShellCheck across binaries, libraries, commands, and adapters.
All 36 BATS files were exercised with isolated configuration and disposable repositories. Seven failures in cmd_pr.bats (3), debug_trap.bats (3), and platform.bats (1) were independently reproduced on untouched baseline 4f58129. The final cleanup suite was rerun after adding the rebase/bisect protections. Hosting-service responses were stubbed.
Regression coverage includes hook commits, same-tip branch switches, detached HEAD, renames, failed/empty post-hook lookups, successful unchanged-tip cleanup, and a real Git ref update injected immediately before final deletion. Both post-hook and atomic-tip protections are tested with --force.
Breaking Changes
None. If a branch changes after its worktree has already been removed, cleanup retains the branch and its metadata and emits a warning.
Checklist
Read CONTRIBUTING.md and followed repository shell conventions.
Performed manual testing on macOS.
Added regression coverage.
No new dependencies, commands, flags, or completion changes.
Implementation remains compatible with Bash 3.2 and uses Git commands available in Git 2.17; runtime validation used Git 2.50.1.

Bug Fixes
Cleanup skips removing a worktree if its branch or commit changes during cleanup, or if its state cannot be verified.
Branches are removed only when they still point to the validated commit and are not checked out elsewhere or reserved by an active Git operation.
Cleanup preserves branches when their state changes or deletion cannot be safely confirmed, avoiding unintended branch removal.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Cleanup revalidates the candidate branch after the preRemove hook. If its identity or tip changed, or cannot be verified, cleanup skips worktree removal. After removal, cleanup deletes the branch only if its ref still matches the validated tip and no worktree or Git operation reserves it.
Cleanup checks the branch identity and tip after preRemove. Tests cover changed branches, detached HEAD, failed lookups, unchanged tips, and hook ordering.
Cleanup checks worktree and rebase/bisect state before deleting the ref with the validated tip. Tests cover concurrent ref changes, symbolic refs, checked-out branches, and operation state.
A concurrent checkout during cleanup can leave another worktree pointing to a deleted branch. The race is narrow, but owners should be aware of it.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 882b7
The change substantially improves protection against deleting newly committed work. However, checking worktree reservations separately from branch deletion widens a narrow local concurrency window in which a branch newly checked out elsewhere can still be deleted. The demonstrated scope is one local repository, not broader remote access or privilege.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The replacement deletion helper snapshots checked-out and rebase/bisect reservations before deleting the ref through update-ref. A concurrent same-tip checkout after those checks is not rejected by the old-tip condition and can leave an active worktree with a dangling branch HEAD. Compared with the previous git branch deletion, the intervening subprocesses and state scans widen the reservation-check window. This is a local shared-state failure-containment concern, not evidence of new remote authority.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified concurrency concern is bounded to branch refs, branch metadata, and worktrees sharing the selected local Git repository. Triggering it requires a concurrent local Git operation or equivalent repository-write capability; the inspected change does not establish a remote attacker path or privilege gain.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The PR strengthens the boundary between provider-authorized cleanup and mutable local hook effects. Hook-induced branch or commit changes, detached HEAD, and unverifiable post-hook state prevent worktree removal even with --force. A later committed ref update is independently protected by conditional deletion.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Forced worktree removal still permits discarding uncommitted contents when the validated tip has not changed. The underlying --force removal behavior is unchanged by this PR; the new commit guard is not a guarantee for uncommitted files.
