Description

Generated Bash, Zsh, and Fish helpers split configured postCd hooks at physical newlines. This could evaluate a conditional body outside its guard, break loops/functions/heredocs, and discard repeated lines during deduplication.

Preserve complete Git-config and trusted .gtrconfig values using NUL-delimited streams and shell arrays. Merge and deduplicate whole values in order, then evaluate each hook once in the user's shell. Environment changes, trust validation, destination checks, and warning/continuation behavior are preserved. Bump the integration cache schema to 13 so existing helpers regenerate.

Motivation

Addresses bug-scan finding 17. For example, the body of a multiline if false; then ... fi hook must never execute independently after its guard is split off. Related: #241 fixes the separate core hook runners.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)

Testing

After merging main (c61b1b5) in e8a8908, all 202 targeted tests passed across init.bats, init_cache.bats, init_hooks.bats, hooks.bats, and picker_identity.bats. ShellCheck, completion generation, generated Bash/Zsh/Fish syntax checks, and whitespace checks also passed. The conflict resolution advances the cache schema to 13 and retains both the picker-identity and whole-hook changes.

Initial validation of commit 8913718 on macOS with Git 2.50.1, Bash 3.2, Zsh 5.9, and Fish 4.9.3. Linux and Windows were not exercised locally.

  • All six new tests/init_hooks.bats regressions passed, both separately and in the full suite. Coverage includes both configuration sources, false guards, loops, functions, Bash/Zsh heredocs, repeated body lines, whole-record duplicates, trailing newlines, persistent exports/functions, trust checks, destination failures, and hook failure continuation.
  • Existing init, cache-upgrade, hook, and trust-storage tests passed.
  • Generated Bash/Zsh/Fish syntax checks, repository ShellCheck, completion generation check, and git diff --check passed.
  • Full bats tests/: 815 passed, 7 failed, 0 skipped. All seven failures reproduced against unchanged base commit 4f58129: three SSH remote-selection tests in cmd_pr.bats, three tests in debug_trap.bats, and the macOS terminal-path quoting test in platform.bats.

Breaking Changes

None. Cached shell integration regenerates after the schema bump.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Post-directory-change hooks in Bash, Zsh, and Fish now preserve multiline values and trailing newlines, run in their configured order, and avoid executing duplicate entries.
    • Hooks from .gtrconfig continue to run only when the file is trusted.
    • Improved hook handling for missing hooks, failed directory changes, and hook errors.
    • Older initialization caches are refreshed to use the updated format.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Generated Bash, Zsh, and Fish helpers now preserve complete multiline postCd hook values from Git configuration and trusted .gtrconfig files. Bash and Zsh deduplicate whole values while preserving order. The init cache schema advances to 13, and tests cover hook handling and cache regeneration.

Changes

Shell Hook Integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
NUL-delimited hook extraction
lib/commands/init.sh
The snapshot helper can emit complete hook values as NUL-delimited records. The Fish wrapper forwards the extraction mode.
Shell hook collection
lib/commands/init.sh, tests/init_hooks.bats
Bash, Zsh, and Fish collect complete hook values. Bash and Zsh skip empty values and deduplicate exact values while preserving order. Tests cover multiline hooks, ordering, trust checks, destination failures, and hook failures.
Init cache regeneration
lib/commands/init.sh, tests/init.bats
The init cache schema advances to 13. Cache-upgrade tests verify regenerated cache headers.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: helizaga, natoboram

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to e8a89

The change preserves multiline hooks and refreshes cached helpers. No merge-blocking issue was identified.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to e8a89

The change preserves complete hook values without an identified new trust bypass. Existing approval and destination checks remain in place. Risk is low, with cross-platform execution and interrupted or concurrent initialization not independently exercised in this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Executed hooks inherit the current user's shell authority and can affect accessible files, commands, environment, and credentials; their effects are not restricted to the selected worktree. This authority already existed at the base. The PR changes record fidelity rather than adding a new execution principal or privilege grant.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The path from repository-controlled .gtrconfig values to shell evaluation still requires approval of the captured definitions. Unapproved values are excluded with a warning. Git-configured hooks retain the existing configuration-validation boundary rather than acquiring the file-hook approval requirement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Deduplication is limited to one invocation; repeated invocations can repeat hook side effects. Ordinary evaluation failure warns and continues without rolling back earlier effects. Bash and Zsh clear the temporary exported context after normal completion, while Fish scopes it locally. Arbitrary trusted hook code is not transactionally contained, as at the base.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: preserve multiline postCd hooks in shell integration" matches the main change. The PR changes the Bash, Zsh, and Fish helpers so they read complete postCd hook values as NUL-delimited records instead of splitting them at physical newlines. The title names the bug (multiline hooks being split), the affected area (shell integration), and the fix type. It is concise, specific, and does not use vague terms. Supporting context from the objectives also covers the schema bump to 12 and the new tests, which the title does not need to mention.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 12.50% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
