fix: copy to every registered worktree with --all - #249
git gtr copy --all could report success while skipping detached worktrees and repeatedly copying to the preferred checkout when multiple worktrees shared a branch.
Enumerate escaped registered path identities instead of branch names, then deduplicate resolved destinations when explicit targets overlap with --all. Preserve source exclusion, --from, dry-run, file/directory patterns, registry validation, and copy-failure propagation. Return failure when no discovered worktree resolves, while preserving successful copying to live destinations and a valid source-only no-op.
Motivation
Every intended registered checkout should receive exactly one copy, including duplicate-branch, detached, external, and nested worktrees.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
Testing
Full BATS suite on macOS / Bash 3.2: 910 passed at 03e4144. After the fixture-only compatibility update, all 70 affected copy/resolver tests passed again with Git 2.50.1.
Built and tested actual Git 2.17.0: 174 passed, with 2 expected skips for newline-path support requiring NUL-delimited worktree listing.
Removed unsupported git worktree add --quiet from copy/resolver fixtures so those tests run on Git 2.17.
Review follow-up (3561df4): 180 copy/resolver/copy-safety tests passed on current Git; the copy suite passed on actual Git 2.17.0 (34 passed, 1 expected newline-support skip). Added coverage for all-missing destinations, an explicit main target, mixed live/stale destinations, and a source-only no-op.
ShellCheck, generated-completion check, and git diff --check passed.
Thirteen new regressions verify exact destination contents and copy counts, overlapping explicit targets, source exclusion, escaped paths, configured patterns, dry-run, and failures.
Manual Testing Checklist
Tested on:
macOS, Bash 3.2, Git 2.50.1 and actual Git 2.17.0
Linux
Windows (Git Bash)
Core functionality tested:
git gtr new, including a named duplicate checkout
git gtr go, git gtr list, and git gtr rm
git gtr copy --all and --dry-run, configured file/directory patterns, and --from
Test Steps
In a disposable repository, create attached and duplicate-branch worktrees, plus detached, nested, and external registered paths.
Configure file/directory copying and run git gtr copy --all --dry-run, then git gtr copy --all.
Verify exact destination contents and one copy per destination; repeat with a detached --from source and overlapping explicit targets.
Expected and observed: each intended registered destination receives one copy; dry-run makes no writes, source checkouts are excluded, unregistered directories remain untouched, and copy failures remain nonzero. With Git 2.17, newline-containing paths are rejected before any destination writes.
Breaking Changes
None.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
copy --all now targets registered worktrees, including detached, nested, and external checkouts, and supports selecting a source with --from.
Bug Fixes
Prevented duplicate copies when targets resolve to the same destination, including overlaps with explicitly supplied targets.
Improved handling of worktree paths containing spaces or special characters.
copy --all remains a valid no-op when only the source worktree is available, and reports an error when no non-main destination resolves.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
copy --all now discovers registered non-main worktrees by path and copies to each resolved destination once. It returns failure when no non-main worktree resolves, while preserving a successful source-only no-op.
The copy loop skips destinations already processed. Tests cover source selection, overlapping targets, configured patterns, dry-run, and copy failures.
Handle missing and source-only destinations lib/commands/copy.sh, tests/cmd_copy.bats
--all fails when no non-main worktree resolves. It remains a successful no-op when only the source resolves. Tests cover missing and live destinations.
The copy-all behavior is ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved issue introduced by this change was identified.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3561d
Registry validation and copy-safety controls are preserved. However, a conditional source-identity mismatch becomes consequential: a branch-selected source whose path ends in a newline can resolve to another directory, while the expanded destination selection can overwrite the intended source. Exposure depends on local worktree configuration and filesystem permissions.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: If branch B belongs to registered checkout P followed by a newline, and directory P also exists, branch-based --from resolution strips the newline and reads from P. The new exact-path --all enumeration can then copy selected files, including credentials, into the intended source checkout because its identity differs from the incorrectly resolved source. The decoder defect predates this PR, but this newly reachable destination worsens its effect. Registry validation and copy-safety checks do not correct the source identity; attacker control of the required local paths is not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed selection can distribute matching source files to every registered non-main checkout, plus explicit targets, including detached and duplicate-branch checkouts previously missed. Filesystem operations use the invoking process's permissions. The evidence does not establish a lower-trust actor's ability to register destinations or control their ownership.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The conditional identity-confusion path requires a newline-ending registered source selected by branch name, an existing directory at its newline-truncated path, matching files there, and destination write permission. The resulting copy can disclose those files to the newly reached checkout or replace the intended source's configuration. Exact path-based --from selection preserves source exclusion, and the legacy listing fallback rejects newline-containing worktree paths. No attacker capability or runtime exploit was verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The unchanged copy helpers reject unsafe relative paths, Git metadata components, and detected symlink components. Leaf publication uses staging and a no-follow rename form. These controls protect copy mechanics but accept the caller-supplied roots; they do not repair an incorrectly resolved source identity.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Registry resolution and filesystem publication remain separate, without a lock spanning them. Concurrent path replacement and interruption therefore retain existing non-atomic limitations. The base also resolved targets before copying, so no new concurrency-control regression is established.
