Summary

Add guided onboarding only to the built Codex plugin. The repository's shared skills/ directory keeps code-review and autofix, so Claude and other agents do not discover a new setup skill.

Store the setup source at .codex-plugin/setup.md. The Codex package builder reads a committed revision, copies the existing shared skills and assets, materializes skills/setup/SKILL.md inside the ZIP, and adds its onboarding declaration to the packaged manifest. Setup checks CLI readiness, uses the official installer when needed, guides browser sign-in, and preserves the scope of an already requested review. Setup alone does not start a review.

Affected surfaces

  • Codex-only setup source, ZIP builder, and listing metadata (desktop execution, subtitle, composer icon).
  • Codex README section, changelog, and distribution inventory.
  • Shared skills, existing agents and commands, other host manifests, and the general quickstart are unchanged from main.

Direct source installation of the Codex manifest retains only the two shared skills. Use the generated package to exercise onboarding. Version remains the pending 1.2.0; marketplace upload and publication are separate.

Public references

Validation

  • git diff origin/main --exit-code -- skills agents commands .claude-plugin .cursor-plugin gemini-extension.json plugin.json: passed; shared surfaces are unchanged.
  • agy plugin validate .: passed with two shared skills, two agents, and one command. gemini extensions validate .: passed.
  • Built the actual ZIP from the committed revision using the command below; packaged relative skill references resolve.
  • Isolated installs with Codex Desktop runtime 0.163.0-alpha.10.2: source checkout discovers only code-review/autofix with no onboarding; generated ZIP discovers all three skills and registers coderabbit:setup as onboarding.
  • Independent read-only packaging review confirmed shared skill bytes are unchanged and the ZIP excludes other host manifests, mod hooks, builder code, and setup source.
  • Setup skill validation and git diff --check: passed.
python3 .codex-plugin/package.py --ref HEAD --output /tmp/coderabbit-codex.zip

This validates packaging and discovery, not browser sign-in or a completed first review. Fresh/existing conversation onboarding and an authenticated review against an approved test backend remain runtime validation work. No global plugin installation, production review, marketplace upload, publication, or merge was performed.

Checklist

  • Setup stays outside shared skill discovery and preserves user intent and review scope.
  • Existing shared skills, native commands, agents, and other host manifests remain unchanged.
  • Referenced packaged files exist and relative skill links resolve.
  • Packaging and distribution documentation match the final implementation.
  • The change contains no credentials, private links, or private operational details.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Codex setup flow for configuring and signing in to the CodeRabbit CLI, with the option to continue into a first review when requested.
    • Codex packages now include the setup guide and onboarding instructions alongside review and autofix skills.
    • Updated the Codex listing description and composer icon.
  • Documentation
    • Added instructions for building a Codex package from a committed revision and clarified that publishing the package does not update the live listing.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR adds a Codex setup skill and a package builder that includes it only in generated Codex plugin ZIPs. It updates Codex plugin metadata and documents setup, package creation, and distribution.

Changes: Codex Plugin Onboarding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setup and review continuation
.codex-plugin/setup.md
The setup skill checks CLI readiness and authentication. It preserves requested review scope and continues to a review only when one was requested and authentication is confirmed.
Package generation and plugin metadata
.codex-plugin/package.py, .codex-plugin/plugin.json
The builder packages a committed revision, adds the setup skill and onboarding declaration to the ZIP, and rejects an existing shared setup skill. The manifest updates executor and listing metadata.
Package and onboarding documentation
README.md, DISTRIBUTION_CHANNELS.md, CHANGELOG.md
The documentation describes package-only onboarding, setup behavior, package creation, and listing metadata.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 38db8

The missing-CLI onboarding path should use a package manager or verified binary before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 38db8

The new onboarding flow executes a downloaded installer before independently verifying its contents. Installation approval and the official HTTPS endpoint limit exposure, but a compromised installer could still execute with the installation process’s permissions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The newly packaged missing-CLI flow executes a mutable HTTPS response directly through sh without prior independent content verification, conflicting with the shared skill’s verified-installation requirement. Authorization and later executable checks do not protect the initial shell execution from compromised installer content.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Compromised installer content could execute with the installation shell’s granted authority. In a host-native environment, this can include user-accessible repositories and credentials; root or cross-tenant privileges are not established. The new distribution exposure is limited to users invoking packaged setup who need and authorize installation, rather than all shared-skill consumers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported conditional attack path is control of the official installer response followed by an authorized missing-CLI setup, which feeds those bytes to sh. Ordinary repository content is not shown to control the fixed URL, and HTTPS and user approval are meaningful counterevidence. No compromised response was observed. The supplied security candidate remains deferred because its required verification receipt is missing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Host authentication and review require the execution environment’s actual permission controls; denial is a blocker, not permission to weaken global settings. Explicit setup permits needed browser login, whereas review-only authentication recovery retains its manual-login handoff. Both paths require successful authentication in the review context.
  • inferred — The Boolean authentication gate also exists in the unchanged review workflow. Setup preserves an existing account and organization by default and directs requested region selection during login. No new wrong-account transmission is established, but runtime verification of account, organization, and region identity remains outside the inspected evidence.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Rechecking availability and avoiding unnecessary upgrades limit repeated installation, but the setup instructions do not establish installation atomicity, cleanup after interruption, concurrent-install coordination, or provenance checks for artifacts left by a partial failure. These remain recovery uncertainties; no stranded insecure installation was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align onboarding with the existing installation policy by using an approved package manager or independently verified installer artifact before execution. Define a fail-closed recovery procedure so interrupted installation cannot make an unverified leftover executable appear trusted.

🟡 Minor · Defer auth login --agent to the user’s terminal. · SKILL.md:46-50

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Defer auth login --agent to the user’s terminal.

When setup is explicitly requested and auth status --agent reports that the user is unauthenticated, the current instruction sends coderabbit auth login --agent through command-scoped host execution. The shared authentication recovery contract allows only auth status --agent and review --agent in that context. It requires the user to run login in the terminal. The host login can therefore be rejected, blocking setup until the user performs a separate terminal login.

Suggested fix
-In a local agent sandbox, use the harness's command-scoped host execution for the trusted CLI's `auth status --agent`, an authorized `auth login --agent`, and the requested review.

“Official source” and “provenance is verified” do not define an executable check. A coderabbit found through PATH or ~/.local/bin can pass the listed path exclusions without being the expected launcher. State the exact accepted package identity, canonical install root, expected ownership and permissions, and integrity check. Apply the same predicate in skills/code-review/references/auth-recovery.md before allowing host authentication or review execution.

Do not pipe the remote installer into sh.

The reachable macOS/Linux missing-CLI path executes the response from curl as shell code. A compromised or changed installer can therefore run arbitrary commands with the user's privileges. This also violates the repository rule requiring a package manager or verified binary.
