Tablet VNC Manager

Tablet VNC Manager is a Linux desktop toolkit for using tablets as Hyprland extended displays over VNC. It combines shell launchers for the actual runtime with a Tauri/React control panel for saved device profiles, display placement, and two-slot live orchestration.

Highlights

• Two runtime slots: USB tether mode and IP mode.
• Saved device library for more devices than the two live outputs the current runtime can run at once.
• Drag-based layout manager for left, right, top, and bottom tablet placement.
• Profile persistence under $XDG_STATE_HOME or $HOME/.local/state.
• Tauri backend writes sanitized profile files and starts/stops the shell runtime scripts.
• Old one-off NotebookLM/browser automation research artifacts were removed from the publishable repo.

Current Scope

This is a Linux/Hyprland project. The code can be cloned and built on a normal development machine with Node.js and Rust, but the runtime commands need a Wayland/Hyprland session plus VNC/display tooling.

Expected runtime tools:

• adb for USB-tether workflows

Quick Start

Build the Tauri manager:

cargo check --manifest-path src-tauri/Cargo.toml

Install the runtime scripts into your user bin directory:

install -Dm755 scripts/tablet-vnc-top "$HOME/.local/bin/tablet-vnc-top"
install -Dm755 scripts/tablet-vnc-stack "$HOME/.local/bin/tablet-vnc-stack"

Open the manager during development:

cd tablet-vnc-gui-tauri-react-2026-03-23
npm run tauri dev

Use the CLI stack directly:

tablet-vnc-stack status
tablet-vnc-stack gui
tablet-vnc-stack start
tablet-vnc-stack stop

Configuration

The manager writes profile files here by default:

$XDG_STATE_HOME/tablet-vnc/profile.env
$XDG_STATE_HOME/tablet-vnc-top/profile.env
$XDG_STATE_HOME/tablet-vnc-manager/devices.json

If XDG_STATE_HOME is not set, the scripts use $HOME/.local/state.

The stack launcher also supports overrides:

Verification

Checked before publishing:

• bash -n for all shell launchers.
• npm install
• npm run build
• npm audit --audit-level=high
• cargo check for the Tauri backend.
• npm run tauri build for Linux .deb and .rpm bundles.
• Repo scan for local machine paths and private runtime data references.

Notes

The app is intentionally local-first. Keep private runtime data outside this repository.
