Closes #982

Root cause

crates/fff-core/src/walk/zlob.rs:26 sets only WalkFlags::GITIGNORE, and zlob 1.7.1 reads only per-directory .gitignore/.ignore. Before this change extra_ignore was set only for non-git roots. Git's info/exclude never reached the walk, so it also never reached the WalkIgnoreRules the watcher filters with. The ripgrep walker already has git_exclude(true) (walk/ripgrep.rs:25).

Fix

At a worktree root, read <commondir>/info/exclude (shared by linked worktrees) through git2::Repository::open and pass it to builder.extra_ignore. That is the same mechanism IGNORED_DIRS uses for non-git roots. The rules then show up in ignore_rules, so watcher updates honor them too. A comments-only file (the git init template) is skipped, so the walk stays on the no-extra-rules path.

Note for @dmtrKovalenko:

  • zlob checks extra_ignore before the .gitignore chain (chainIgnored, zig-src/walker/worker.zig:592). So an info/exclude verdict beats a .gitignore negation, which is the reverse of git's precedence. Fixing that needs a zlob change. fix: honor git core.excludesFile when indexing (#874) #878 has the same issue.
  • WalkBuilder::extra_ignore keeps only the last call. If fix: honor git core.excludesFile when indexing (#874) #878 (core.excludesFile) lands too, both sources must be joined into one call.
  • Only applied when the base is the worktree root. zlob does not read parent .gitignore for subdirectory bases either.

Steps to reproduce

cargo build --release -p fff-mcp --no-default-features --features zlob
R=$(mktemp -d) && cd "$R" && git init -q
mkdir src excluded && echo a > src/a.txt && echo b > excluded/b.txt
echo 'excluded/' >> .git/info/exclude
git ls-files -co --exclude-standard   # src/a.txt

Drive fff-mcp over stdio: initialize, tools/call find_files {"query":"txt"}, then mkdir -p excluded/later && echo c > excluded/later/c.txt, wait 3s, call find_files again:

S=$(mktemp -d); { printf '%s\n' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2024-11-05","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"t","version":"0"}}}' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"notifications/initialized"}'; sleep 2
  printf '%s\n' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":2,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"find_files","arguments":{"query":"txt"}}}'; sleep 1
  mkdir -p excluded/later && echo c > excluded/later/c.txt; sleep 3
  printf '%s\n' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":3,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"find_files","arguments":{"query":"txt"}}}'; sleep 2
} | /path/to/fff/target/release/fff-mcp --no-update-check --frecency-db $S/f --history-db $S/h --log-file $S/l.log "$R"
expected: id2 -> src/a.txt            id3 -> src/a.txt
actual:   id2 -> src/a.txt excluded/b.txt
          id3 -> src/a.txt excluded/b.txt excluded/later/c.txt

The same leak happens in a linked worktree (git worktree add, base = worktree dir) and with or without a root .gitignore.

How verified

  • New test walk::tests::honors_git_info_exclude (main checkout + linked worktree, plus zlob ignore_rules). It fails on pre-fix zlob.rs and passes after: cargo test -p fff-search --no-default-features --features zlob --lib walk::tests (5/5), and on ripgrep cargo test -p fff-search --lib walk::tests (4/4).
  • cargo test -p fff-search --no-default-features --features zlob: all suites pass (256 lib tests).
  • make lint-rust clean, cargo fmt --all -- --check clean.
  • E2E with the stdio driver above, pre-fix vs fixed binary. For all three variants (root .gitignore, info/exclude only, linked worktree), the fixed binary returns src/a.txt for both the scan and the watcher.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • File searches now respect repository-specific Git exclude rules, including in linked worktrees. Excluded paths are omitted from traversal, while files not matched by those rules remain available. This makes search results better reflect the exclusions configured for each Git repository.

zlob reads only in-tree .gitignore/.ignore, so paths hidden only via
info/exclude were indexed and passed by the watcher. Feed the common
git dir's info/exclude through extra_ignore when walking a worktree root.

Walkthrough

The zlob walker now loads active patterns from Git’s common info/exclude file and applies them as extra ignore rules. A test checks behavior in a repository and linked worktree.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #982 requires zlob to honor .git/info/exclude for the initial walk and watcher updates, including linked worktrees. The PR loads Repository::commondir()/info/exclude, passes active rules to builder.extra_ignore, and preserves them in ignore_rules. The added test covers a main checkout, a linked worktree, and watcher rules. Reported zlob tests pass.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Reload info/exclude when it changes.

If a user edits an active info/exclude file while the watcher runs, the watcher keeps using the rules captured by this walk. It rescans for .gitignore changes, but it neither watches the common info directory nor treats info/exclude as an ignore-definition change. New exclusions therefore do not take effect until another rescan or restart. Watch the common exclude file and trigger a rule-refreshing rescan. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
