Production, 2026-11-05: node 01M6MCE1 evicted three workspaces under memory pressure. All three conversations resumed on other nodes within minutes. The evicted source workspaces, however, never got physical-deletion proof, and the empty node stayed running for more than five hours until an operator removed it. A fourth workspace, 01M6MK1T, had its deletion dead-lettered because a wake cleared its chat binding mid-delete. Idea 01M6N9JMBRDN1NQ8VZNEF7FMQ7, task 01M6NAWT7RTBEQHXJTVMMX1W97.
This PR fixes the four root causes together.
The final eviction capture is quiesced (packages/vm-agent).
The live pre-stop capture stays as the relocation fallback. After docker stop, a bounded final capture runs through the stopped-source helper (captureQuiescedEvictionSnapshot). It runs off the pressure loop, so a slow commit never delays the next eviction.
It reports quiesced only if the source did not run and no other running container mounts the workspace volume or host root. Both conditions are checked before and after the capture.
Helper hygiene:
workspace-scoped labels on the helper container and image
memory and PID limits
a free-disk precheck against the writable-layer size (overflow-safe)
reaping at startup, before deletion removes the volume, and by an age-based reaper
Preservation is granted to quiesced evictions, and a durable receipt is kept per source (apps/api).
/session-snapshot/complete records quiesced. The eviction callback grants preserved=1 only to a quiesced, complete generation of exactly that source.
New column workspaces.preservation_receipt_json (migration 0224, additive and nullable). It is written for full sleeps and quiesced evictions, so a successor's capture can no longer erase the source's cleanup authority.
A restored wake stamps restoredAt and schedules deletion of the source.
Chat detachment is directional. Deletion identity now accepts the current chat binding becoming NULL, which is an authorized release by a wake. It still fences a different chat and NULL → bound. All other identity fields remain strict (generation, incarnation, user, node, project).
The warm handoff is no longer starved. When the destroy sweep refuses an empty running node only for artifact proof, it hands the node to the warm pool. From there the existing warm timeout and stranded-node deadline bound any residue.
Not in scope: tuning eviction aggressiveness, Stop semantics, and the cf-container runtime (it has no Docker and its retirement path is separate).
Throughput and bounds (rule 81)
Final capture.
Bound: 300 s (EVICTION_FINAL_SNAPSHOT_TIMEOUT_SECONDS). The capture is off the pressure loop and tracked by the controller WaitGroup.
Throughput:docker commit measured 18 MiB/s worst case in nested overlay. At that rate 300 s covers about 5 GiB of writable layer. The staging VM measurement is below.
Over the bound: a larger layer times out, and the outcome is today's behaviour. The pre-stop capture still relocates the conversation, no preservation is granted, and the node reaches warm and the existing deadlines.
Helper limits: memory 1 GiB and 256 PIDs by default. Disk headroom is the writable layer plus 1 GiB free.
Stale reaper: runs every deletion-reconciler tick. A helper is reaped once it is older than 2 × (snapshot timeout + final timeout).
Safety-net sweep: the candidate set additionally includes json_valid(preservation_receipt_json) rows under the existing LIMIT ?. Per-tick cost is unchanged.
Artifact-blocked handoff: at most one markIdle DO RPC per refused candidate already in the destroy page. A handed-off node leaves the candidate set through warm_since.
Validation
pnpm lint
pnpm typecheck
pnpm test: the targeted suites pass. The full-suite hook timeouts (infra DNS hook, list-project-agents-pr-owner, mcp-knowledge-policy-tools) also reproduce on unmodified main under load, so CI decides.
Additional validation:
go test -race ./... in packages/vm-agent
go test -tags integration -run StoppedSourceHelper ./internal/server/ against real Docker: HOME, plus git staged, unstaged, untracked and an unpushed commit, round-trip through stop → helper → restore. A 128 MiB layer took about 12 s.
Candidate-selection change stated above.

Staging Verification Evidence
The staging run history follows.
Final run on the merge SHA 5694f36 (task 01M6PSTEG5GD014242EEKKZDSP, deploy 42109881680, two fresh cx23 nodes, VM agent 5694f36): PASS.
Eviction. The agent ran an OOM in its shell. The final capture through the stopped-source helper (generation 01M6PT98) came back quiesced:1 preserved:1, with receipt quiesced_eviction at 21:37:05. The tightened writer check (every container, ancestor mounts) did not misfire on a real node running docker-model-runner.
Wake. Claimed at 21:37:10 and placed on fresh node 01M6PTA4. The VM reported restore_status=restored, and the snapshot's restored_at is 21:44:15.3.
Commit and stamp. The wake committed to in_progress at 21:44:16.682. The receipt's restoredAt is also 21:44:16.682, so it was written in the same D1 batch, for the restored generation. restoredWorkspaceId is 01M6PTMH.
Release. The source was deleted with vm_agent_confirmed at 21:44:25.5, 9 s after the commit. At 21:44:59 the successor's first capture moved the snapshot row, and the receipt survived it.
Continuity. The restored agent reported the branch, the unpushed commit 20ed1bb, the staged, unstaged and untracked files, and the HOME marker all intact.
Cleanup. Only docker-model-runner remained on the source node, so the source container and helper were gone. Both test nodes were deleted, and staging was released at 21:49 UTC.
Earlier run on f3f92f5, before the CodeRabbit fixes: passed end to end (run 5, task 01M6PC9HCT6MC6ZY4N40516GNJ, 17:32–17:49 UTC). Later commits (ef1f153, 1dd5a0d) only narrow a fence branch (evictionRecoveryRestoredByRunner) that this happy path never reaches, because the source was deleted after the commit. The workers test covers that branch.
Eviction. An OOM in the agent shell triggered the live pre-stop capture (17:38:38). After docker stop, the stopped-source helper took the final capture (17:38:55, generation 01M6PCN8, quiesced:1 preserved:1). The eviction callback returned 204 in 7.0 s and wrote receipt quiesced_eviction (preservedAt 17:38:56). The same request claimed the wake and reactivated the TaskRunner (session_recovery.waking, task_runner_do_service.reactivated).
Wake. Placement excluded the source node and provisioned 01M6PCP3. The task was delegated to 01M6PCYD at 17:43:48, restoredAt was stamped at 17:45:04.4 (restoredWorkspaceId01M6PCYD), and the wake committed (in_progress) at 17:45:05.8.
Release. The source was deleted with runtime_deletion_proof=vm_agent_confirmed at 17:45:11.9, 6 s after the commit. At 17:45:55 the successor's own capture moved the snapshot row, and the source's receipt survived it.
Continuity. The restored agent reported the branch, the unpushed commit, the staged, unstaged and untracked files, and the HOME marker all intact.
Helper hygiene. Only the system docker-model-runner container remained on the source node; the source container and the snapshot helper were gone.
Cleanup. Both test nodes were deleted. No staging nodes of this PR remain.
Defects staging found along the way, all fixed with regression tests:
Run 2 (12:53–13:05 UTC). The source was released before the wake committed, and the eviction fence then failed the wake. Fixed in 001f2c9 and 2c69257. The emptied source node retired on its own, 34 min after the source deletion.
Run 3 (14:18–14:30 UTC). The heartbeat's delivery retry reconciled the stop intent during the final capture and sent snapshotCaptured:false, which got 409 forever. A background snapshot also prepared a new generation on the evicted workspace. Fixed in 27f6030 and 360ecce.
Run 4 (16:33–17:06 UTC, d811282). The eviction path was fully correct. However, the callback hit the agent's 10 s client timeout, and the Worker was cancelled after the wake claim and before the TaskRunner start. The agent's retry inside the 10-minute claim lease saw the claim as in flight and stopped, so the conversation stranded in waking. This is a pre-existing gap: recovery was synchronous on main. Fixed in f3f92f5, which registers the recovery with waitUntil while still awaiting it.
CI, not staging. The fence tolerance from 2c69257 also accepted an explicit Restart of the source mid-handoff. Fixed in ef1f153 and 1dd5a0d: the tolerance now keys on the source keeping its fenced generation, which a Restart always changes.
Unrelated finding, filed as a backlog task: a node provisioned for a 3.5 GB request on 4 GB rejects its own task until the 15-minute timeout.

Data Flow Trace
Memory pressure triggers eviction. resourcemon/eviction.goperformEviction takes the live capture (server/eviction.gocaptureEvictionSessionSnapshot), then runs docker stop. If the pre-stop capture was not quiesced, it starts go finishEviction (resourcemon/eviction_final_snapshot.go).
finishEviction runs captureFinalSnapshot, which calls server/eviction_final_snapshot.gocaptureQuiescedEvictionSnapshot. That function takes the snapshot and lifecycle locks, checks deletion intent and target currency, then calls runStoppedSourceSnapshot, which calls startStoppedSnapshotHelper (eviction_snapshot_helper.go). The capture runs through runSessionSnapshot, with quiescence checked before completion (session_snapshot.go). Completion is reported by completeSnapshot(..., quiesced) (session_snapshot_control_plane.go).
On the API side, routes/workspaces/session-snapshots.ts complete calls completeSessionSnapshot (session-snapshot-persistence.ts), which writes cleanup_identity_json.$.quiesced.
finishEviction then calls MarkWorkspaceEvicted, then NotifyEviction. The eviction callback (routes/projects/workspace-eviction-callback.ts) runs one batch: evictedWorkspaceSnapshotSleepStatement grants preserved=1 only to the quiesced generation (workspace-eviction-recovery.ts), and preservationReceiptStatement writes the receipt (workspace-preservation-receipt.ts).
Recovery: recoverWorkspaceAfterEviction, then the wake on another node (TaskRunner agent-session-step.ts). After completeSessionSnapshotRecovery, releaseRestoredSourceWorkspaces stamps restoredAt and calls scheduleWorkspaceDeletion.
NodeLifecycle DO processDueEntry calls attemptWorkspaceDeletion (workspace-deletion.ts). automaticDeletionPreservationExpiresAt reads the receipt first (workspace-deletion-preservation.ts); the chat binding is checked by chatBindingAllowsDeletion and CHAT_BINDING_RELEASE_TOLERANT_SQL. The VM side runs handleSafeDeleteWorkspace, which reaps helpers and removes the container, volume and host root. Proof is recorded as runtime_deletion_proof='vm_agent_confirmed'.
The node is now empty. If an earlier sweep refused it for artifact proof, destroyNodeForCleanup calls handOffArtifactBlockedEmptyNode (cleanup-refusal.ts), which calls handOffEmptyWorkspaceNode. From there it goes warm, then the warm timeout, then the existing retirement path.
Untested Gaps
On staging the callback did not actually time out in the final run (7.0 s), so the disconnect path is proven by the route tests (which hold the wake at its midpoint), not live.
A wake that never restores leaves its evicted source preserved, by design: unrestored data is never deleted automatically. The stranded-node deadline or a user action (Start, Restart, delete) is the escape.
The emptied source node retires through the existing cron backstop (NODE_EMPTY_WARM_HANDOFF_GRACE_MS, then the warm timeout). The queued-deletion confirm path does not call handOffEmptyWorkspaceNode itself. Run 2 observed retirement 34 min after the source deletion.
A forged quiesced flag from inside the devcontainer in SAM-proxy mode is not prevented: the callback token is in the devcontainer env (session_host_startup.goinjectProxyCredential). Under policy 4b7b5e40 the node is per-user and the devcontainer is not a security boundary, so the effect is limited to that user's own source cleanup. It is documented.
Post-Mortem (Required for bug fix PRs)
What broke
Evicted source workspaces were never deleted. Their nodes stayed running and empty for hours, which cost cloud spend and used up the shared 10-server Hetzner limit. A workspace whose chat binding was released by a wake had its deletion dead-lettered.
Root cause
Only a verified full sleep granted preserved=1. Eviction captures were live, so nothing ever granted them, and nothing scheduled deletion of the source.
Preservation was read from the mutable per-chat snapshot row, which the successor overwrites.
chatSessionId was compared strictly in the deletion identity, but a wake legitimately nulls it.
recordCleanupRefusal backoff starved empty_node_warm_handoff for running nodes, so the deadline never started.
Class of bug
Cleanup authority derived from mutable shared state. Cleanup authority was taken from a record that a later, legitimate actor rewrites: the successor's snapshot row and the wake's chat release. The safety gate therefore refused forever, and the "refused" path never converged (rule 74's proxy-signal family).
Why it wasn't caught
Tests seeded preserved rows directly instead of driving eviction → wake → successor capture → deletion through the real writers.
No test combined a wake with a queued deletion.
Lifecycle latency is not alerted on.
Process fix included in this PR
A capability test through the real writers (workspace-preservation-receipt-real-sql.test.ts).

The main design change: the source receipt is stamped atomically with the wake's commit, only for a complete restore, matched on the exact generation that was restored. A receipt grants deletion only after that stamp.

Principle XI: every new timeout and limit is configurable with defaults (EVICTION_FINAL_SNAPSHOT_TIMEOUT_SECONDS, SNAPSHOT_HELPER_MEMORY_LIMIT, SNAPSHOT_HELPER_PIDS_LIMIT, SNAPSHOT_HELPER_MIN_FREE_BYTES).
Migration safety: additive nullable column only.
Risks:
Deleting a source whose work was not saved. Mitigated: preservation needs a quiesced capture of exactly that generation and incarnation, plus artifacts verified in R2, or a restore of that generation.
Touching a successor. Mitigated: the directional chat rule never accepts a different chat, and all other identity fields stay strict.
Helper resource use. Mitigated by limits, the disk precheck, timeouts and the reapers.
Rollout (rule 54): old agents never report quiesced, so they keep today's behaviour.

Walkthrough
The changes add post-stop eviction snapshots with quiescence reporting, durable preservation receipts, and recovery and deletion updates. They also add snapshot-helper resource limits and cleanup, chat-binding release handling, and empty-node warm-pool handoff.
The VM agent loads helper timeout, memory, PID, and free-space settings. It checks disk headroom and reaps helpers during startup, reconciliation, and deletion.
Eviction capture and completion packages/vm-agent/internal/resourcemon/eviction*, packages/vm-agent/internal/server/eviction*, packages/vm-agent/internal/server/session_snapshot*, apps/api/src/routes/workspaces/session-snapshots.ts, apps/www/src/content/docs/docs/reference/vm-agent.md
Eviction completion can capture the stopped source when the initial snapshot is not quiesced. Snapshot completion carries the quiesced flag, and the VM agent prevents competing snapshots during eviction finalization.
The API persists generation-specific receipts, validates them for deletion authority, and retains a snapshot-row fallback. The cleanup sweep accepts eligible receipts, with restored-state requirements for evicted sources.
Recovery stamps source receipts and checks restored-runner identity. Deletion permits a chat binding released to NULL, but rejects a different binding. Cleanup can hand off qualifying empty running nodes to the warm pool.
Resolve snapshot fallback preservation, restoration proof, and cleanup ordering before merging. Failed captures or restores can leave replacement workspaces missing files, while cleanup races can strand recovery or retain source resources. Helper disk and lifecycle safeguards also need correction.

…apable helper
After docker stop, recapture the evicted workspace in a quiet helper built
from the stopped container. The completion is flagged quiesced only when the
source stayed stopped and no other running container mounts the workspace
volume or host root. Failure keeps the pre-stop capture.
Helpers carry a workspace label, memory/PID limits and a disk-headroom check,
are reaped at startup and before deletion removes the workspace volume.

…hat-detach tolerant deletion
- workspaces.preservation_receipt_json (migration 0224) records the preserved
snapshot generation on the source workspace, so the successor rewriting the
per-chat snapshot row no longer strands the source. A restored wake stamps
restoredAt and queues the source for deletion.
- /session-snapshot/complete records a VM-reported quiesced capture; the
eviction sleep statement grants preservation only for that generation.
- Deletion identity accepts the authorized release of the chat binding by a
wake (never a different chat); stop finalization likewise.
- A destroy sweep that refuses an empty running node only for missing artifact
proof hands it to the warm pool instead of leaving it in refusal backoff.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…apture and receipts
- Integration test (build tag integration): stopped source with HOME and Git
staged/unstaged/untracked/unpushed state is captured through the helper and
restored into a fresh container with the production restore primitives; a
sidecar on the workspace volume blocks certification; a leaked helper pins the
volume until the startup reaper removes it.
- Split resourcemon eviction metrics and the final-capture step out of
eviction.go (file-size rule).
- Docs: VM agent eviction, configuration, architecture overview, troubleshooting.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…er; review fixes
- The post-stop final capture runs off the single eviction loop, so a slow
docker commit cannot delay evicting another workspace (Go review HIGH).
- Deletion-intent guard on the final capture like every other capture path.
- Mount check parses docker's JSON (any byte in a path), fails closed on
unparseable mounts.
- Age-based reaper in the deletion reconciler removes helpers older than any
capture can run (security review: orphaned full-layer copy).
- Overflow-safe free-space math; accurate validation messages.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…iew test gaps
- cleanupWorkspaceForDeletion compared the caller's (possibly stale) row with
strict chat equality; it now uses the same directional rule (Cloudflare review
HIGH).
- Log a failed receipt backfill instead of swallowing it.
- Tests: end-to-end through the real eviction recovery and wake writers; lost
deletion response; legacy-row receipt backfill; stale-row cleanup gate.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Staging found the wake failing with 'Eviction generation changed before
replacement allocation': releaseRestoredSourceWorkspaces ran before the
final recovery-authority check, the source's deletion completed within
seconds, and the eviction fence (source must stay 'evicted') revoked the
wake that had just restored it.
- TaskRunner: clear evictionFence when the wake commits and release the
source only after that (it re-checks authority on every later alarm).
- Preservation: an eviction receipt (and the eviction's sleeping snapshot
row) authorizes deletion only after a restore of that generation;
verified artifacts alone no longer release an evicted source.
- Stopped-workspace sweep: do not select an unrestored evicted source,
which the queue refuses and would pin the head of the bounded page.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… own restore
Review of the release-ordering fix found two windows:
- A lost release (crash or failed D1 write after the wake committed) plus the
successor's first capture moving the snapshot row left the source with an
unrestored receipt that nothing would select again.
- The sweep's restored-snapshot clause turns true at restore commit, seconds
before the fence clear, so an early deletion could still revoke the wake.
- Stamp restoredAt (stamp-only release) right after completeSessionSnapshotRecovery;
idempotent per restored workspace, so the later release re-matches and queues.
- assertRecoveryAuthority accepts a fence mismatch once this runner restored the
snapshot into its own workspace (evictionRecoveryRestoredByRunner: task,
workspace and wake attempt must match).
- Tests: real-SQL fence through assertRecoveryAuthority; lost release + successor
capture; legacy no-receipt eviction path.

…shot
Staging found that the async final capture opened a window between the
container stop and the recorded eviction. The heartbeat's callback retry
claimed the stop's write-ahead intent in that window, reconciled it as an
interrupted stop and sent snapshotCaptured=false, which the control plane
refuses with 409 forever; the controller's own record then found the
eviction already recorded and never sent the real callback. A background
snapshot that started after the final capture also prepared a new
generation and replaced the final capture's cleanup identity.
- The stop intent records snapshotCaptured: the controller stops only after
a successful pre-stop capture.
- markEvictionFinalizing (in memory) from the intent until the eviction is
recorded; the delivery retry leaves such an intent to the controller, a
failed stop clears the mark so the reconciler retries as before.
- Ordinary snapshots are refused while finalizing or evicted (409 for a
synchronous sleep).
- Log the helper's end state (oomKilled/running/exitCode) before removal to
explain the Docker oom events seen on staging.

go-specialist review: the write-ahead intent became visible to the delivery

…connect
The VM agent's eviction callback client gives up after 10 s. On staging a
slow D1 pushed the synchronous wake past that, the runtime cancelled the
unregistered work between the snapshot claim and the TaskRunner start, and
the VM's retry inside the claim lease saw the claim as in flight and
stopped, stranding the conversation in 'waking'. Register the recovery
with waitUntil while still awaiting it for the response, and move the
recovery helpers into a sibling module to keep the route under 500 lines.

this runner had restored the snapshot. An explicit Restart of the evicted

Review of ef1f153: requiring status='deleted' would permanently fence out a
retry of this same wake while its own source deletion is still in flight
('stopping', same generation). A Restart always mints a new generation, so
the generation match alone is what discriminates it.

The restored-runner exception still requires the source workspace row to exist. Cleanup paths that physically remove a confirmed source row can therefore revoke the wake that this exception is intended to protect.
The next authority check can permanently fail an otherwise successful restored wake.
This can occur when: After restore but before TaskRunner clears its fence, another cleanup path confirms deletion and removes the source's D1 row rather than merely setting status='deleted'.

apps/api/src/services/workspace-deletion-preservation.ts:73-74 Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift
The new receipt fast path bypasses the snapshot-row capture and lifecycle checks. If a workspace resumes or accepts new writes without advancing eviction_generation or clearing its receipt, an older preservation grant can authorize deletion of newer state.
Automatic deletion could remove files not represented by the receipt's checkpoint.
This can occur when: A receipt-bearing workspace is reused in place under the same generation, accumulates changes, and later becomes stopped or evicted without preserving those changes.

Stamp the source receipt with the generation the restore committed.
releaseRestoredSourceWorkspaces sets restoredAt only where the receipt's snapshotGeneration equals the live session_snapshots.snapshot_generation of the restored row. A successor capture can complete between completeSessionSnapshotRecovery and this stamp. That capture replaces the live generation and moves the row's workspace_id to the successor workspace. The stamp then updates no rows. The second call after transitionToInProgress uses the same match and also updates no rows.
The evicted source keeps its receipt without restoredAt. Its snapshot row no longer points at it, so the deletion candidate query does not select it. The source stays evicted and is retained, not deleted.
Match the receipt against the generation that the restore committed, not the live generation. Do not match by workspace alone. A workspace-only match could record a restore for a different generation.

- The wake's commit to in_progress stamps restoredAt on the source receipt in
the same D1 batch (transitionToInProgress, now in in-progress-transition.ts),
matched on the generation the restore committed (RETURNING, persisted in

- A receipt grants deletion only after that restore; until then the snapshot

@coderabbitai Here is how the follow-ups and the nitpick in your review were handled.
Follow-up: the restored-runner exception needs the source row to exist (session-recovery-eviction.ts). Fixed in 8e42191. The exception now accepts this runner's own restore unless a source row exists with a different node or eviction generation, so a source row that cleanup hard-deleted (cleanupWorkspaceForDeletion) no longer revokes the wake. An explicit Restart still mints a new generation and still revokes it. Test: accepts a source whose row cleanup already deleted once this runner restored the snapshot; restoring the JOIN shape turns it red.
Follow-up: the receipt fast path bypasses the snapshot-row lifecycle checks (workspace-deletion-preservation.ts). Fixed in 8e42191. A receipt now grants deletion only after a committed wake restored its exact generation (restoredAt, which the wake's commit stamps). The "artifacts still verify" branch is gone. Before that restore, the snapshot row decides, with its lifecycle checks. For an evicted source it also requires the wake's commit (evictionWakeCommittedSql). Test: an unrestored receipt grants nothing on its own; the snapshot row decides.
Follow-up: stamp the receipt with the generation the restore committed (agent-session-step.ts). Fixed in 8e42191. completeSessionSnapshotRecoveryGeneration returns the restored generation via RETURNING, and the runner persists it (stepResults.restoredSnapshotGeneration). The commit's stamp and the later release both match that generation, not the live row. Test: the commit stamps the restored generation even after the successor moved the row, with a live-row control that stamps nothing.
Nitpick: assert the timeout error in TestFinalSnapshotRequiresTimeout. Fixed in a4fc027. The test now requires FinalSnapshotTimeout in the error.
…controller lifecycles (CodeRabbit)
- The TaskRunner records whether its own snapshot restore brought back the
files (snapshotRestore 'restored' vs 'degraded'); only a complete restore
stamps the source receipt at commit and releases the source. The legacy
snapshot-row path and the stale-workspace sweep also require
restore_status = 'restored'.
- A deletion queued while the workspace was unbound (chat NULL) now fences a
chat that binds it later; an entry written before bindings were recorded
(undefined) is still not compared.
- The sweep selects a receipt only while it names the workspace's current
runtime, so a mismatched receipt cannot hold the head of the page.
- EvictionController Start and Close share a mutex and a closed flag: a Start
after Close (the startup helper reap finishing after shutdown) does nothing.
Each guard reverted once; only its test went red.

A TaskRunner retry after its commit re-runs completeSessionSnapshotRecovery,
which rewrote session_snapshots.restored_at later than the committed task's
started_at and made the legacy commit check (evictionWakeCommittedSql) read
the committed wake as uncommitted. restored_at is now set only when the
claim turns into a restore. Adds the post-commit retry regression and a
discriminating sweep test for the receipt identity conjuncts; documents the
VM writer check's cost bound and the leaked-helper case.

From there it goes warm, then the warm timeout, then the existing retirement path.Untested Gaps
NODE_EMPTY_WARM_HANDOFF_GRACE_MS, then the warm timeout). The queued-deletion confirm path does not callhandOffEmptyWorkspaceNodeitself. Run 2 observed retirement 34 min after the source deletion.quiescedflag from inside the devcontainer in SAM-proxy mode is not prevented: the callback token is in the devcontainer env (session_host_startup.goinjectProxyCredential). Under policy 4b7b5e40 the node is per-user and the devcontainer is not a security boundary, so the effect is limited to that user's own source cleanup. It is documented.Post-Mortem (Required for bug fix PRs)
What broke
Evicted source workspaces were never deleted. Their nodes stayed
runningand empty for hours, which cost cloud spend and used up the shared 10-server Hetzner limit. A workspace whose chat binding was released by a wake had its deletion dead-lettered.Root cause
preserved=1. Eviction captures were live, so nothing ever granted them, and nothing scheduled deletion of the source.chatSessionIdwas compared strictly in the deletion identity, but a wake legitimately nulls it.recordCleanupRefusalbackoff starvedempty_node_warm_handofffor running nodes, so the deadline never started.Class of bug
Cleanup authority derived from mutable shared state. Cleanup authority was taken from a record that a later, legitimate actor rewrites: the successor's snapshot row and the wake's chat release. The safety gate therefore refused forever, and the "refused" path never converged (rule 74's proxy-signal family).

needs-human-reviewlabel added and merge deferred to human (N/A: all completed)cleanupWorkspaceForDeletion. LOW: backfill logging. Fixed in 21e6a41. MEDIUM (handoff can rebind a chat onto a deleted row): pre-existing via #2526 and handled by existing readers, not changedquiesced; same-user only under policy 4b7b5e40, documentedwaitUntilsemantics, error propagation and the disconnect tests. HIGH:status = 'deleted'would fence out a retry of the same wake while its source deletion is still in flight (stopping). Fixed in 1dd5a0d, which keys on the generation alone, with a discriminatingstoppingtestrestored_atpaststarted_at, breaking the legacy commit check. CodeRabbit Notes
Requested at 18:51 UTC once CI was green. The review arrived at 19:29 UTC: CHANGES_REQUESTED, 18 actionable comments plus 3 follow-ups and 1 nitpick. Every item was valid and is fixed:
Each thread has a reply naming the fix and its discriminating test, and all threads are resolved. The follow-ups and the nitpick are answered in a PR comment. The
coderabbit-reviewlabel stayed on the PR. CodeRabbit did not review the fix commits incrementally: its check showsReview skippedon 5694f36, which was pushed at 20:52 UTC and observed until 21:50 UTC. Per rule 25, that does not block. No CodeRabbit thread is unresolved, and the merge state is CLEAN.The main design change: the source receipt is stamped atomically with the wake's commit, only for a complete restore, matched on the exact generation that was restored. A receipt grants deletion only after that stamp.
