As a developer working in the editor, I want consistent API's and tools that allow me to extend the base editor.
Describe the solution you'd like
Currently the editor is very coupled, we should decouple the editor pieces to allow it to be more extensible.
On top of that, we should create standard operating constructs that provide the foundation for other editor features. (ex. editor windows, toolbar menus, pane rearrangement, etc.)
Additional context
There are many good examples of editor functionality wanted, and they can be found on pretty much every off the shelf IDE today such as JetBrains, Visual Studio, and Visual Studio Code.
Visual Studio in particular has amazing documentation on building extensions for the IDE and has a great API surface to facilitate it. We should look at it as a great example.
