What

examples/coding-agent-opencode:

  • recipes/{laptop,cluster,cloud}/opencode.json: OpenCode custom-provider configs on @ai-sdk/openai-compatible. The Cloud recipe names zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash:relay with limit.context 131072, limit.output 32768, tool_call, reasoning with interleaved.field: reasoning_content, per-model options.include_reasoning: true, and timeout / headerTimeout / chunkTimeout above 300 s. The Cloud and cluster recipes read the endpoint from {env:SIE_BASE_URL}/v1 and the key from {env:SIE_API_KEY}, so they run unchanged against any endpoint that serves the model. The laptop recipe lists only the model it was run with, Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B:long-context.
  • conformance.py: an agent-loop conformance check through the openai package. It covers tool_choice: auto as OpenCode sends it, streaming tool-call deltas assembling into calls, parallel calls, a tool-result round trip, a 64K-plus prompt, finish_reason stop / tool_calls / length, usage on the final chunk, include_reasoning (streamed and not streamed), and tool_choice: required recorded as supported or refused. A model counts as reasoning when it returns reasoning or its completion tokens exceed its visible text's UTF-8 bytes by more than 16; it counts as not reasoning only when every answer took at most 16 completion tokens; in between, include_reasoning is recorded as unknown rather than passed. When the endpoint accepts include_reasoning, every tools turn carries it and the round trip sends the first turn's reasoning back as reasoning_content with content: "", which is the wire the Cloud recipe makes OpenCode send. 429 and busy 503 refusals are retried after Retry-After and recorded; an error event mid-stream is recorded as that case's error.
  • fixture/ and run_gate.sh: a seeded package with two failing tests and the task "make the tests pass". The script runs opencode run non-interactively on a copy with the chosen recipe, then judges with pytest in a fresh uv tool run environment outside the copy, pinned to the seeded pyproject.toml and tests/. Both seeded pytest runs drop PYTEST_ADDOPTS and PYTEST_PLUGINS, so the caller's environment cannot deselect the failing tests. The run is bounded: the build agent gets a step budget (GATE_STEPS, default 50, passed as agent.build.steps through OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT with --agent build), and a background watchdog stops the run's whole process group after GATE_DEADLINE_SECONDS (default 1800), with TERM and, for anything still alive 10 s later, KILL; the gate waits for that escalation before its verdict. That works on macOS, which has no timeout. A changed test, an added conftest.py, a non-zero opencode run or a run past its deadline each end in a GATE FAIL line, and Ctrl-C stops the run too.
  • tests/test_conformance.py (the checker against a scripted OpenAI-compatible stub, one broken thing per test) and tests/test_run_gate.py (run_gate.sh end to end with a scripted stand-in for opencode).
  • CI: a step in CI / Python runs uv lock --check, ruff and pytest for the example.
  • BFCL simple / multiple described as a recorded measurement with placeholders, and a gallery row in examples/README.md.

Verified

  • OpenCode 1.19.0 against a recording stub: {env:SIE_BASE_URL}/v1 is substituted in baseURL; the model id with a colon is sent verbatim; per-model options land as top-level body fields (include_reasoning: true on every request); the timeout keys stay out of the body; every agent turn is stream: true, stream_options.include_usage: true, tool_choice: "auto", ten tools, no temperature, no parallel_tool_calls. The assistant tool-call turn goes back with content: "" and, with interleaved.field: reasoning_content, reasoning_content set to that turn's reasoning or ""; without interleaved, only when the turn streamed reasoning.
  • conformance.py against a local sie-server at 530dcde8 (main, with feat(api): opt-in reasoning_content on chat completions via include_reasoning #728 and fix(server): accept tool_choice and parallel_tool_calls on the MLX chat path #729), mise run serve -- -b sglang on an Apple M3 Max with 48 GB under macOS 15.7, MLX backend (mlx-community/Qwen3.5-4B-4bit): Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B:long-context and bare Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B both gave 9 pass, 0 fail, 2 recorded. tool_choice: auto and include_reasoning are accepted, and tool_choice: required is recorded as refused. The README's laptop section now carries this table.
  • ./run_gate.sh laptop on that server with OpenCode 1.19.0 and no global OpenCode config: GATE PASS, after 7 agent steps and 6 tool calls in 16 seconds; rerun on the final script and checker (head 52b06a8d), GATE PASS after 5 steps and 4 tool calls in 8 seconds, and both conformance tables unchanged.
  • With feat(api): opt-in reasoning_content on chat completions via include_reasoning #728 and fix(server): accept tool_choice and parallel_tool_calls on the MLX chat path #729 merged locally before they landed, Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B:thinking: include_reasoning passed with 245 reasoning_content deltas and an 801-character message.reasoning_content, and tool_result_round_trip failed with an empty final answer. The MLX child returns the answer in content with its reasoning already split into a separate reasoning field; the thinking-block stripper starts inside the block for this profile, never sees the closing tag in content, and hides the answer. Not in this PR.
  • The bounds, with OpenCode 1.19.0 against a stub endpoint on the laptop recipe's port:
    • A stub that returns a tool call on every turn, with GATE_STEPS=3: from the third step on, OpenCode appends its "MAXIMUM STEPS REACHED ... Respond with text only" message, so the budget reaches the build agent. OpenCode still declares the tools with tool_choice: auto, though, and keeps going while the model keeps calling them. The deadline stopped the run (GATE FAIL: opencode run passed its 300s deadline, after 1667 steps). The README states that the step budget is an instruction and the deadline is the hard stop.
    • A stub that never answers the tools turn, with GATE_DEADLINE_SECONDS=20: GATE FAIL after 21 s, with no OpenCode process left behind.
  • tests/test_run_gate.py adds a caller's PYTEST_ADDOPTS or PYTEST_PLUGINS that would deselect the failing tests, the step budget handed to the build agent, and a run that outlives a 2 s deadline, whose sleeping child must be gone afterwards, once with a child that ignores TERM so only the KILL escalation stops it. Each fails against the change reverted: without the unset, without either variable in it, without the budget or --agent build, without the deadline marker, and with group kills replaced by single-process kills or with job control off (the orphaned child then holds the output pipe for its full 120 s). All gate tests pass under both macOS /bin/bash 3.2 and bash 5.3, and shellcheck is clean.
  • The 68,000-word prompt counts 71,431 tokens with cl100k_base, 71,917 with o200k_base, 74,835 with Qwen3.5's tokenizer and 71,432 with GLM-5.3-Flash's (the previous 60,000 words counted 63,032 with GLM-5.3-Flash's, under 65,536).
  • test_a_long_answer_without_reasoning_is_recorded_not_judged: a long answer from a non-reasoning model, and the same answer with hidden reasoning and the flag dropped, are recorded as unknown; both passed as "did not reason" against the previous checker.
  • uv lock --check, ruff format --check, ruff check and pytest (35 tests) are green in the example, run the way the new CI step runs them, and mise run lint and the public-tree check pass. Against the previous checker 15 of the conformance tests fail, and against the previous run_gate.sh the planted-environment and failed-run tests fail.

Pending, kept as placeholders

The SIE Cloud conformance table, the served-by header (remote), the gate run, the terminal recording, the usage rows (served_by: relay) and the BFCL figures are filled in once the endpoint serves the model.

Follow-ups, not in this PR

  • The MLX :thinking profile loses the visible answer, as above.
  • A fake engine that can script a tool-calling chat turn, so the conformance check can run against sie-fake.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR adds an OpenCode coding-agent example with Cloud, cluster, and laptop recipes. It includes an invoice fixture, a seeded gate, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint conformance checker, automated tests, CI checks, and setup documentation.

Changes: OpenCode coding-agent example

Layer / File(s) Summary
Seeded invoice fixture
examples/coding-agent-opencode/fixture/*
Adds invoice amount parsing and totaling functions, fixture instructions and project settings, and tests for formatted amounts, parenthesized credits, and totals. The parser removes currency symbols and commas but does not convert parentheses to negative values.
Recipes and seeded gate
examples/coding-agent-opencode/recipes/*, examples/coding-agent-opencode/run_gate.sh, examples/coding-agent-opencode/tests/test_run_gate.py, examples/coding-agent-opencode/.gitignore
Adds three OpenCode recipes and a gate script that runs fixture tests before and after OpenCode. The script checks the OpenCode exit status, deadline, test and project-file changes, and added conftest.py files. Tests cover successful and failing gate outcomes, seeded-test protection, step-budget configuration, and deadline termination.
Endpoint conformance checks
examples/coding-agent-opencode/conformance.py, examples/coding-agent-opencode/tests/test_conformance.py
Adds chat checks for tool calls, long prompts, finish reasons, usage, reasoning, and required tool choice. The checker handles warm-up and retries, records results in a JSON report, and returns a nonzero exit status when cases fail. Scripted endpoint tests cover simulated responses and errors.
Example setup and CI checks
examples/coding-agent-opencode/README.md, examples/coding-agent-opencode/pyproject.toml, examples/README.md, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Documents setup, request behavior, conformance criteria, and recorded or pending results. CI runs lockfile, Ruff, and pytest checks for the example.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52b06

The example's conformance checker can report "did not reason" for very short answers where reasoning cannot be ruled out. This is a narrow reporting inaccuracy in an example, so the PR is safe to merge with a small follow-up fix.

Tools turns carry include_reasoning when the endpoint accepts it, and the
round trip sends the first turn's reasoning back as reasoning_content with
empty content, as OpenCode 1.19.0 does with interleaved.field set.

include_reasoning now also checks the non-streamed message, and fails when
the model reasoned (returned reasoning, or spent completion tokens its
visible text cannot account for) but the flag returned none.

Retry 429 and busy 503 refusals after Retry-After and record each retry;
record an error event mid-stream and a bare-list /v1/models instead of
crashing; count only a 400 or 422 as a tool_choice refusal; record
tool_choice_auto as not judged when the tools turn failed for another
reason; stop recording x-sie-upstream. Every request asks for up to 4096
tokens so a thinking model can answer, the long prompt is 68,000 words, and
a model whose declared window is under 64K tokens has the long-prompt case
recorded rather than judged.
…s print a verdict

The before and after pytest runs use an isolated uv tool environment, so
nothing the agent plants in the worked copy's .venv reaches the verdict. A
non-zero opencode run now ends in a GATE FAIL line instead of stopping the
script under set -e. The Cloud and cluster recipes need SIE_BASE_URL and
SIE_API_KEY.
…hat was run

The Cloud and cluster recipes take baseURL from {env:SIE_BASE_URL}. The
laptop recipe lists only the model it was run with, and the README and
gallery row say it was run on Apple Silicon only. The expected served-by
value is remote, BFCL is described as a recorded measurement, and the
evidence slots include the terminal recording and the usage rows.

Round 2, head 074007af. Each point raised in review and what changed, with the test that covers it:

  • BFCL text presented a tool that is not in this repository. The section now describes BFCL as a recorded measurement (dataset, splits, row counts, AST scoring, model id) with placeholders, and names no harness. Text only, no test.
  • CI never ran the example. A CI / Python step runs uv lock --check, ruff format --check, ruff check and pytest from examples/coding-agent-opencode.
  • Laptop claims beyond what was run. The README and gallery row say the laptop recipe was run on Apple Silicon (MLX) with Qwen3.5-4B only; the NVIDIA claim and Qwen/Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507 are gone from the laptop path. The cluster recipe is labelled an unrun template.
  • Expected x-sie-served-by. The gateway stamps local or remote; the slot now expects remote, and the served_by: relay usage row has its own slot.
  • The Cloud path named one endpoint. The Cloud and cluster recipes read {env:SIE_BASE_URL}/v1; run_gate.sh refuses to start without SIE_BASE_URL and SIE_API_KEY for them; the README asks the reader to check /v1/models lists the model first. OpenCode 1.19.0 was checked to substitute the variable in baseURL.
  • The tools turns did not carry the Cloud recipe's wire. When the endpoint accepts include_reasoning, every tools turn carries it and the round trip sends reasoning_content back with content: "", as OpenCode 1.19.0 does (checked with a recording stub). The README's interleaved.field description is corrected. Tests: test_tools_turns_carry_include_reasoning_and_send_reasoning_back, test_refused_include_reasoning_fails_and_the_tools_turns_go_without_it.
  • include_reasoning could not fail when the flag was ignored. The case now also sends a non-streamed request and fails when the model reasoned (it returned reasoning, or spent more completion tokens than its visible text accounts for) but no delta.reasoning_content or no message.reasoning_content came back. /v1/models does not declare reasoning, so the token count is the signal. Tests: test_a_reasoning_model_whose_server_drops_the_flag_fails, test_reasoning_missing_from_the_non_streamed_message_fails. Run against a local server with feat(api): opt-in reasoning_content on chat completions via include_reasoning #728: 245 deltas and 801 characters of message.reasoning_content on Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B:thinking, and "did not reason" on the non-thinking profile.
  • Evidence slots. Terminal recording and usage rows added.
  • Cluster run on a 16K window always exited 1. When the declared window in /v1/models is under 65,536, the long-prompt case is recorded (refused or accepted) instead of judged, and the README says so. Test: test_long_prompt_under_a_smaller_declared_window_is_recorded.
  • Error event mid-stream crashed the run. openai.APIError and httpx.HTTPError are recorded as the case's error. Test: test_an_error_event_mid_stream_is_recorded_not_raised (the stub sends the gateway's error-chunk shape).
  • /v1/models as a JSON array crashed the run. Handled; the entry is still found. Test: test_a_models_list_answered_as_a_json_array_keeps_the_report.
  • 64K threshold on other tokenizers. 68,000 words: 71,431 (cl100k_base), 71,917 (o200k_base), 74,835 (Qwen3.5), 71,432 (GLM-5.3-Flash; the old prompt counted 63,032 there). The stub now counts one token per word, a lower bound for word-level tokenizers. Test: test_long_prompt_clears_the_threshold_one_token_per_word.
  • Token budgets too small for a thinking model. Every request but the length case asks for up to 4,096 tokens, the output cap of the smallest profile the recipes name. Test: test_a_thinking_model_has_room_to_answer_every_case (the stub spends 3,000 tokens thinking first).
  • Retryable refusals. 429 and 503 other than MODEL_LOADING are retried after Retry-After up to 5 minutes per request and recorded; only 400 and 422 count as a tool_choice: required refusal. Tests: test_busy_refusals_are_retried_and_recorded, test_required_rate_limited_is_a_failure_not_a_refusal.
  • Upstream name in reports. x-sie-upstream is no longer recorded. Asserted in test_conforming_wire_passes_every_case.
  • Gate loopholes. The verdict runs in a fresh uv tool run --isolated --no-config environment outside the worked copy, and a non-zero opencode run prints GATE FAIL: opencode run exited N. Tests: test_an_environment_planted_in_the_worked_copy_is_not_used (passes the cheat under the previous script), test_a_failed_opencode_run_still_prints_a_verdict. Seen live: the laptop gate on the MLX path now ends GATE FAIL: opencode run exited 1.
  • A failed tools turn blamed tool_choice. tool_choice_auto fails only on a refusal naming the field; any other failure is recorded as not judged. Test: test_a_failed_tools_turn_does_not_blame_tool_choice.

Two runs started in the same second shared one output directory, so the
second copied the fixture inside the first's worked copy and judged the
first run's result. The directory is now created with mktemp -d. The BFCL
section reads as a planned measurement until its numbers are recorded.

- Line 50: Bound the unattended OpenCode run in the `opencode run` invocation by
configuring an agent-step limit and enforcing an overall run deadline; keep
provider request timeouts separate, since they do not limit repeated turns.

…est runs

The seeded pytest runs now drop PYTEST_ADDOPTS and PYTEST_PLUGINS, so the
caller's environment cannot deselect the failing tests.

The unattended run gets a step budget on the build agent (GATE_STEPS,
default 50) through OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, and a deadline
(GATE_DEADLINE_SECONDS, default 1800). A watchdog stops the run's whole
process group when the deadline passes, and the gate prints GATE FAIL.
Ctrl-C stops the run too.
The conformance check now passes 9 of 9 judged cases on Apple Silicon
with the MLX backend, and the seeded gate passes. The README states the
machine, backend, model and commit, and describes the gate's step budget
and deadline.

Add coverage for KILL escalation.

The sleep 120 child can exit on TERM, so this test can pass without reaching the KILL escalation. Add a separate case that runs trap '' TERM before starting the child, then asserts that the child no longer exists after the gate returns.

On the deadline path the gate now waits for the watchdog instead of
killing it, so a process that ignores TERM is still killed. The watchdog
stops polling as soon as the group is gone, so the usual case returns
without the 10 s grace.
… tell

The hidden-token count now subtracts the visible text's UTF-8 bytes, an
upper bound on its tokens under a byte-level tokenizer, so it is a lower
bound on unseen tokens. A model that returned no reasoning counts as not
reasoning only when no answer took more than 16 completion tokens.
Otherwise the case is recorded. The laptop gate evidence is re-recorded
on the final script.
