Refs #183. This adds a beta lab, still work in progress, on RouterOS 7.26beta1.

examples/cmr/ builds four socket-linked CHRs. One is a CMR controller, one is a transit router, one is a client reachable only over OSPF, and one is a client that finds the controller by discovery. The lab pairs them, then tests labels, run-script, topology, alerts and HTTP webhooks. --probe adds the six-way pairing matrix, export versus binary backup, and a real outage of the remote client. There's a Graphviz topology in config/topology.dot (and .svg).

Recheck of the support reports

A second agent ran each finding again on a fresh lab. The data is in config/7.26beta1-recheck.json.

Finding Recheck
Export omits /cmr set controller settings Confirmed. Device labels are missing from the export too.
Client pairing-requirement=confirm rejected Confirmed. Completion offers only none/password, and :parse rejects it. The controller offers all three.
First bridge-added event missed Confirmed on 3 clients, with typed and untyped rules. It's per device, not per rule.
Client disable/enable clears pairing New. Raised as a question for MikroTik.
Routed client does not reconnect after restart Withdrawn, it was the lab. While OSPF had no route, the connect left via the user-mode default route, and the SYN kept the 10.0.2.15 source. lab.ts now resets tcp/54321 outbound on ether1.

Verification

  • bun run cmr.ts --probe --report …: exit 0 in 5m22s. That includes stopping and starting the remote and an automatic reconnect without re-pairing. No VMs were left behind.
  • bun run check: pass.
  • bun test test/unit/: 1220 pass, 19 skip, 0 fail.

This lab is not part of the CI smoke subset. routeros-cmr/SKILL.md was corrected to match these results, but that change is in the PR-gated routeros-skills repo and isn't included here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a beta CMR lab example with four RouterOS devices linked over a socket-based network. The lab demonstrates OSPF, device pairing, alerts, and webhooks, with optional connectivity probes and restart testing.
    • Added CLI launch options for running probes, holding the lab open, testing a first-bridge setup, and saving a report.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup instructions, a sample report, and field findings covering verified behavior, limitations, and areas not tested.

…ndings (#183)

Four socket-linked CHRs: a CMR controller, a transit router, a client
reachable only over OSPF, and a client that finds its controller by
discovery. The lab pairs them, then exercises labels, fleet scripts,
topology, alerts and HTTP webhooks. `--probe` adds the pairing matrix,
export versus binary backup, and a real outage of the remote client.

Each support-report finding was reproduced again on a fresh lab. Three
are confirmed: export omits the controller settings, client
`pairing-requirement=confirm` is rejected, and the first bridge on a
device does not fire `interface-change=added`. Client disable/enable
clearing pairing is added as a question. "Routed client does not
reconnect after restart" is withdrawn: while OSPF had no route, the
connect left via the user-mode default route, and its SYN kept the
10.0.2.15 source. The lab now resets tcp/54321 outbound on ether1, and
the full `--probe` run passes.

Marked as a beta lab, work in progress. Adds a Graphviz topology under
config/.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a beta CMR lab example with four socket-linked RouterOS CHRs, a driver for setup and alert checks, optional probes, and reports of test results and limitations.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Four-CHR lab setup
examples/cmr/tool/lab.ts, examples/cmr/README.md, examples/COVERAGE.md
The lab configures four CHRs, socket networks, OSPF, CMR clients, and managed devices. The documentation describes the topology and run options.

The driver checks CMR configuration, script fan-out, alerts, and webhooks. Its extended run probes an outage and restart. The launchers run the driver, and the demo fixture records a sample state. The example indexes and spell-check files include related updates.
Probes and recorded findings

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7735c

The optional probe can pass its outage check without observing a new alert, and cleanup can leave the restarted VM running. Fix both before relying on the probe run.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7735c

The new functionality is confined to a disposable local lab, with protected management access and isolated CMR links. However, restarting the remote router loses its cleanup registration, so completion can leave an unmanaged router process running.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The extended exercise restarts the remote router without registering its replacement handle for teardown. Cleanup retains the stopped original handle, whose PID has been cleared; it skips process termination while deleting credentials and machine state. A detached replacement QEMU can therefore remain running after success or a later failure, outside normal inventory and cleanup ownership.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated control scope is four disposable routers under the invoking local user’s authority. Controller script execution can affect every lab-labeled paired device. The cleanup concern concerns one restarted remote router per extended run, rather than a demonstrated production, tenant or cross-service expansion.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The concrete concern is loss of lifecycle control, not a verified authentication bypass. After restart, stale-handle cleanup can leave a detached guest and its localhost management listeners alive while removing inventory and credentials. No remotely supplied script or wider-network exploit path was established by the inspected entrypoints.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pairing bridges local managed credentials into controller authority over discovered clients. Identity matching, per-instance credentials, argument escaping and connection-state checks constrain this transition. Per-run network names and CMR firewall rules provide additional isolation; pairing identity is not independently bound to a stronger asset identifier in the helper.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Finally-based teardown and relaunch locking are existing safeguards, but neither repairs the caller’s stale tracking collection. Machine removal deletes files, while socket unregistration only updates registry membership; neither supplies an alternative process-termination path when the tracked PID is absent.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve cleanup ownership across handle replacement, and require termination of the current process before deleting credentials or inventory. Validate this invariant after both successful restart and failure following restart.

Learning: When a PowerShell script in examples dot-sources examples/common.ps1, set $ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop' before loading it. This ensures failures during loading terminate execution; setting the preference inside common.ps1 is too late if dot-sourcing fails. Because Start-Job runs in a separate process, set the required error preference explicitly inside each job script block as well.

#183)

Review fixes for #184:

- Teardown looks each lab machine up by name. After `--probe` restarts
the remote, the tracked handle's remove() deleted the machine state
without stopping the new QEMU. Earlier runs leaked that process while
  `quickchr list` looked clean.
- Ctrl-C at any point requests cancellation. The next lab step throws,
and the VMs are removed once any in-flight start finishes. A second
  Ctrl-C removes them immediately.
- A library-mode start that fails after spawning QEMU removes its machine.
- The outage check counts DOWN alerts and webhooks from before the stop,
because the probes' controller reboot can fire them first.
- Probe observations are recorded as they are made, so a failing probe
  still reports what it saw.
- A transport error on /system/backup/load (RouterOS reboots) no longer
aborts the probe; HTTP errors still do.

The topology diagram now also shows the CMR settings, alert rules,
upgrade rule, layout and webhook path.
