Tweak

Tweak is a browser extension for saving element removal, zoom, typography, appearance, CSS, and optional local JavaScript settings for each website.

Features

  • Remove a single page element or broaden the selection to related elements, with saved rules that return after reloads.
  • Adjust tab zoom, text size, fonts, weight, line height, letter spacing, and text case per website.
  • Change hue, brightness, contrast, saturation, and lightness, or add custom CSS for more control.
  • Save optional custom JavaScript that runs locally in an isolated browser user-script environment.
  • Search, rename, disable, open, and reset saved website tweaks from one management page.

Install

Public Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons listings for version 0.1.1 are pending. Links will be added after approval.

Tweak supports Chrome and Chromium-based browsers from version 120, Firefox from version 109, and Zen releases based on Firefox 109 or later. It works on top-level HTTP and HTTPS pages; browsers do not allow it to run on internal settings pages or extension-store pages.

Developers can install an unpacked or temporary build using the instructions below.

Usage

  1. Open a website and select the Tweak toolbar button.
  2. Select Tweak, point to an element, and choose what to remove; or open Appearance, Type, or Code to edit the page.
  3. Save the changes. Tweak reapplies them when the page reloads or the browser restarts.
  4. Use Manage all sites to review, disable, rename, or reset saved tweaks.

Custom JavaScript requires Allow User Scripts in Chromium. Firefox asks for the optional userScripts permission when the feature is enabled.

Privacy and permissions

Tweak stores website origins, settings, generated selectors, identifying text excerpts, and user-authored CSS or JavaScript in browser.storage.local. It has no server or account system and does not transmit browsing activity, stored data, diagnostics, analytics, or telemetry.

The extension requests storage, activeTab, scripting, and tabs to save settings, open the editor, communicate with supported tabs, and control tab zoom. Access to HTTP and HTTPS pages lets it load the editor and reapply saved settings. The userScripts permission is used only for JavaScript written and saved by the user. See PRIVACY.md for the complete statement.

Development

Development requires Node.js 20 or later, npm, and a supported browser. The project uses TypeScript, WXT, Vitest, and tldts.

git clone https://github.com/yednapg/tweak.git
cd tweak
npm ci
npm run dev

Local development and visual testing use the installed Chromium app through npm run dev (or the explicit npm run dev:chromium alias). Build the Chromium extension with npm run build:chrome; run validation with npm run typecheck and npm test.

Contributing

Bug reports, feature requests, documentation improvements, and focused pull requests are welcome through GitHub Issues.

Bug reports should include the Tweak version, operating system, browser and version, reproduction steps, expected and actual behavior, and relevant screenshots or logs with sensitive information removed. Before opening a pull request, run the type checker and unit tests.
